Well today I will try to venture outside to see if I can get my truck out of the drive way. I might have to go to work Tomorrow. Think I will be buying a 4X4 in the near future.

Living in the rural contryside is great except for weather like this! It is a battle just to get to the main road.

Ummmm .... I never heard of doing the "float test" on hatching eggs ... only on testing to see if eggs are fresh or not (for eating). I would think that putting hatching eggs in water would kill the embryo. I'm no expert in that though, but this is the first time I've heard of float test on hatching eggs. However, I've only been raising chickens for around 5 years now & have only hatched hundreds of chicks.

Yes, guinea eggs take longer to hatch ... 26-28 days total.

I got it from here:

Thanks for the link. Like I said, I've never heard of float test for hatching eggs. I think I'll stick to candling my hatching eggs & tossing any that are clear or haven't developed properly, just to be sure I don't kill any viable chicks by drowning them. I personally would just wait until they've gone a few days past the hatch date and then open each egg to see why they didn't hatch.

Oh my ... sorry to hear that you're stranded at home with no water. That's got to be tough on you with the little ones.

Thankfully you still have electricity. Stay safe and warm. I hope your road gets cleared soon and your pipes thaw soon too.

Can you melt snow to flush the toilet with? That won't solve the need for water for cooking, but it will keep Montana busy bringing you snow in a bucket and will make life a little more tolerable.

Up in Central Oklahoma, they are predicting temps in the 40s for Sunday - with possible snow on Monday. Any chance you might get a warm up prior to any more snow? I tried checking Weatherbug.com for the Lawton area and they didn't have a 7 day forecast.

Buckguy/Monty raises Welsummers. You might check with him. Also, I "think" that OkCarla raises Welsummers and if so, she hatches lots of chicks. She also has Marans in several varieties if you are looking for the dark egg layers.

My neighbor, Jack Cocoran, will have chicks in about 5 or 6 weeks.
