even thoulgh layer pellets have cal in them it may not be enufe and layer feed usaly says to ofer ouster shell with feed if your birds are not free rang i would ofer ouster shell for cal needed for egg laying

That is one thing that you really need to do is to read the tags on the feed. The brand that I feed says that it is a complete ration and I have never had any issues with it. It has always kept good flesh on the birds and good quality eggs.

Now my breeders are a totally different story as I am after babies and not table fare.

Cayuse I give my birds all the weeds and grass I pull up from my garden and flower beds. They seem to know what they can and can 't eat. They really enjoy it and it makes for those great dark orange egg yolks! I don't give grit but make sure they have oyster shell to eat.most of my pens have ground access so they are able to get natural grit. It's just one more expense that I figure I can get by without.

hmmm...no matter where i go they are all high- i get the scratch cuz the guineas like the seed, the ducks like the corn... the chickens are picky though- sometimes all they want is to pick sunflower seed out...

I just got some Big V game feed. It has pellets, black sunflower seeds and some corn (whole) among other things that look tasty to birds. Seems like a lot of scratch mixed in. I am not sure that the pellets and corn are small enough for my bantams.
I have only been feeding Evergreen crumbys; Start, Grow, Lay. I would like to add DE and red pepper too. Anybody got a good ratio to mix? I think Muesky has a good one but I can't remember the ratios. Maybe she will be at Blanchard.

I mix chopped corn, black sunflower seeds and crimped oats for my banties....they love it, i tried alfalfa pellets but they are too big for my banties...
