Got the evening feeding and watering done awhile ago, with Vashi's very welcome help. We had at least 12" of snow here. Had measured 11" when we fed earlier, but at least an additional inch fell after that--and we measured in an area that wind had moved some out. Intended to measure in front where the wind was much calmer.

Feeding was quite difficult today to say the least! Our paths were almost obliterated for the evening feeding/watering, but it was a bit easier without the snowfall and high wind. Glad that's done; don't look forward to doing it all again for the next few days.

Had 6 to 12" of snow in several of the pens; all had some snow. Even one coop had snow in it and the silkies had quite a bit of snow on them. Didn't seem to bother them, though, and we've been through worse than that before with no ill effects.

We lost our Brahma roo last week, may be looking for a replacement at POOPs. Went ahead and moved the Ameraucanas back out of the breeding pens to the main coop. I guess that'll make our sexlinks olive eggers.


I finally got around to making a frame for my old countertop. I'll be setting up the incubator tonight and probably starting a batch of BBS Ams to check for fertility.


When the snow drifts got waist high, I finally broke down and shoveled some paths. I think everyone's well and accounted for, but I didn't spend much time out looking.

Everyone is safely tucked in. I'm glad I made a final round. Our white Ameraucanas rooster must have gone out for one last drink because I found him sitting next to the water container. He seemed okay, but he didn't stand up when I told him to hurry into the coop. I went in to pet him and discovered that his beard was frozen into the water container. He didn't want me to take him into the house to thaw, I guess, since he kicked up a ruckus and ended up losing nearly a dozen feathers. He's in the coop telling his girls all about it.

Ah well, it'll grow back.


Drifts are so high under the coop I can't even find the feeder anymore. My waterers are all still open. I guess the outside one maybe melted the drifts around it?

Grace - I didn't want the Pekins to be bored, so I put them out in a covered pen when we had a few hours of sunshine today. I hooked up a heated water dish and the pair acted like I'd set them up at a day spa.

Hi all got a question, I'm getting 10 barred rock hens and 1 rooster in April. According to a book I'm reading it suggests that I make a coop that is 3-4 square feet per bird. Is this a good idea or can it be smaller?
I'm going to let them run the yard (which is really large) during good weather, but if today is any indication, I know they will also have to be housed 24 hours a day for several days at time and I don't want them to stress out due to cramped quarters.
What your coops like?
