Hey babrnlc - you got the eggs from a friend/breeder, right? What kind are they?
We don't know lol. We have brown, light brown, green. He has cornish, ee, and guinneas that I know of. We got our two hen from him. After we got the egg. So it could be eggs from my girls.
How are things in your world, Trish? How's Kansas - snowy like here?
Oh I see, I thought that was just for eating eggs. In any case, I'd wait a few more days too.
Yep, we're super cold and tons of snow. I haven't been out other than to shovel or care for birds. I've been told there are trucks running constantly moving loads of snow out of town.
I think all the birds are fine. Their waterers are fine. Only one frozen pipe in the house, kitchen sink cold line. A little worried I don't have enough wood brought in. I thought 2 ricks would do it. Not sure now and the rest is buried by huge drifts. We're up to -3F now. At least the sun is out. Set a bunch of eggs to check fertility.
Watching the rescue recap and commentary. Praying for them all.
Ha - except for the firewood and incubating, your report of what you've been doing is just like mine.
I need to work on shoveling the driveway today - waiting for the temperature to get above 0 before I get out there.
Last year I put a heat light in the coop - but after reading more about added heat, I chose not to do that this year, and my hens seem to be just fine. I've been taking scratch to the hens every morning and again at night - also tossing some out on top of the snow outside my window and along the path to the coop for the wild birds.
I only shoveled some of the drive and some of the front walk yesterday. I shoveled paths to the coop doors and shoveled and raked under yesterday. It's going to be miserably wet and muddy whenever it decides to melt. We put down wood stove ash all around and under the coop.
Glad the birds are getting out some today. The coop had a bit of odor this AM. I've got everything opened up and airing out. Can't get to the straw yet.
Morning,
Exciting happenings here; went out to check on my Cochins and give them fresh water, scratch and warm oatmeal. I heard peeping coming from under my two broody Mille Fleur hens! - 5 chicks; one was dead, I brought the other 4 in, one died shortly later. The other 3 are under a heat lamp and seem to be doing ok. These are thethe pullet's first clutches and I was intending to let them raise them but it is just too cold. I hope I didn't make the girls go off their nests. I'll check again in a couple of hours. W
When does a pullet become a hen?
Congrats on the new younguns. Probably good you brought them in.
Our errant broody was sitting out yesterday AM, sans chicks. Don't know if they didn't hatch or died of the cold. Either way, she hasn't taken off again.
