I have heelers, particularly the blue heeler is incredibly smart. They weigh from 40 - 50 lbs. I saw some for sale at the last blanchard auction. We just got the chickens and the dogs walked around smelling em then went and laid down. Had a chick on ones forhead just to test and he just looked at me like, really mom, this is degrading.
Also, I do not have fences that would necessarily keep my dogs in but for the most part they stay in. Only time they run out on the road is when some stray is passing.
Love love love my heelers.
I love heelers, and its great yours is that good with chickens, but yours would be more the exception than the rule, I have known more than 20 heelers in my life, and have owned 3, and that mentality in a heeler is definitely in the minority, but as I stated before i fyou can get one that lacks some of the intense drive they are bred for, they make great dogs....would love one myself if I didnt have so many dogs and could turn their 'drive dial' down a few notches...
ours has no issues with the chickens at all , but she works better than any other dog we have seen ever, and we have had her work next to other dogs and she can put them to shame
