Old and Rare Breeds

Saladin, Are you saying pluck ALL the feathers or just the larger feathers from around the vent? I was advised to leave the sperm feathers at the lip of the vent. And it is plucking vs clipping. I was advised that clipping the feathers leaves sharp edges that can injure the rooster. would you agree with that advice?
I pluck all the ones I can get my hands on big and small. There are always some left that I can't pull out.

Hi all- I am in 4-H and we are doing an intense study on the APA Standard. We drew random breeds yesterday to write a report on. I drew the Redcap. I could not find a specific Redcap thread, and this thread came up when I searched the forum. Google is no help either. So I have some questions for the Redcap experts here.

1. What is the history of the Redcap?
2. Comb? This has really stumped me looking at pictures of them. Would that be a rose comb?
3. Skin color?
4. Angle of tail?
5. Special DQ's?

I also have to draw the line of back. If anyone has a picture of a bird with an exceptional back line for the Redcap breed, if you could please post it it would be much apperciated. Thanks!

I think the closest example to a redcap you would ever be able to find would be in the APA standard. That also would answer the other questions you had, Redcaps are listed in the English Class.

Thank you. I do have an ABA Standard, however the Redcap is not in it. I'll ask my friend who has a standard to look it up for me.

1. I do not know? From Derbyshire England.
2. rose comb
3. white
4. 50 degrees
5. More than half white earlobes, foreign colored feathers except white primaries, mottled breast in males, other than slate or laden blue shanks.

I looked it up, since you do not have the Standard. Long, sloping, broad back.

Do, indeed, ask your friend to study his APA Standard. This link should attach you to an old book with a bit of history. LINK
I found this book by going to "google books". It is an excellent resource to find older literature on poultry. Just go to the "google books" search engine and type in the name of the breed about whose history you'd like to read. Lots of books and old mgasine articles will pop up. You can't read all of the, only those that say "full view" as opposed to "preview" or "limited view". Best of luck and study that Standard!
