Old and Rare Breeds

I have heard of them several years ago. Never seen them.

These look so neat, pretty, I especially like that rosecomb on that rooster. Where did your friens get these and were they very expensive. I live in Arkansas just outside of Little Rock.

They don't seem to breed true, that's for sure.

where did you here about them and what did you here about them???

I think it was back several years ago ( I'm 48) so I was probably 14 to 15 when I heard about them, and as far as what I heard about them I really don't remember, they jsut sounds neat and cool to me then.

The American Dominique A Treatise for the Fancier by Mark A. Fields is supposed to have a mention of the Red Dominique in it... im going to go look on Google books and see what i can find...

I beleive you are right. If they are autosexable then they are similar to the Rhodebar except they substituted the Dominique instead of the barred Rock. It wouldnt be that hard to reproduce either.

page 168 under "foreign color"
Under no circumstances should foreign color be tolerated in Dominiques. This is indicative of a breed other than Dominiques being used in the breeding pen. the ONLY exception to this ruleis pure black or pure white. (emphasis mine) individual feathers of these two colors often appear in even the best of birds. While permissible, they should be kept to a minimum.

We have a goat in labor out in the barn; I'll check on her and then see if there's not something else in the book.

Found it! (darn, I'm good)

Page 101

"In the deep south, there were also flocks of red Dominiques. After thoroughly questioning the individuals who remember this variety, the author has determined that in fact, these were a strain of Dominiques, not simply poor type Rhode Island Reds or Red Leghorns. However, this red strain almost never went broody, making one wonder if red Leghorns was (sic) in their ancestry. "

Remember,
American Dominiques is a breed and Dominiques is a pattern of color.

The American Dominiques is a Black and White Barred breed.
The Dominiques with the exception of the American Dominique, always precedes a breed inferring it is a variety as in Dominique Leghorns, Dominique Spanish, Dominique Italians, Dominique Game Fowl and so on.
I will also say that there are many variation of the Dominiques variety (Black and White barred, Red and White barred, Crele, etc.)

As for heritagehabitatfarms "Red" Dominique, they are only Dominique by variety not by breed.
