Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Well my broody is still sitting. We had six eggs under her, but one was very porous and is now gone. So one is due on Monday and the other four are due on Wednesday, but saw that the first one was piping before dinner. Crazy erly. So my hope is that she will stay on those eggs to hatch them all. I really want those other babies to hatch too. They will be part of my new d'uccle breeding group. Let's hope. Well I will peek again in the morning... Let's hope this baby will be ok over night. Cool night. But they are inside the coop so that is good.

I read that you can melt wax and put it on the crack.

I guess I made it sound better than it was. It was crushed on one end. But I like idea of trying to preserve a cracked egg.

Thanks for the idea. I bet others could do that.

Hey, my daughter just told me a friend of hers from college wrote a cute children's book about hatching chickens so I downloaded it to my Kindle Fire. It was wonderful and accurate! It's called Samantha Hatches the Chicken Egg by Daisy Griffin. If you have kids or grandkids, this is a great book to tell them about hatching eggs. Enjoy! oh yea, she also mentions BYC in the book!!!!

Got back last night from the beach and checked on the chicks because I missed them - they seem different somehow. Found all four of 5 week old babies were on the roost with their mommas and I was shocked at how much they grew in just one week!

This moring Topsy was out in the yard scratching around, she had left her little ones under the coop. Smokey was with her two wandering around and clucking. Seems this time it's Topsy who is first to be ready to let go but Smokey is still clinging to motherhood. Wonder if Topsy will start laying soon.

when my orps chick came out of her when i was there she started pecking it untill it ran back under!!

My hen has a pip!! So exciting! I heard it peeping up a storm! Cant wait to see what hatches! tomorrow is hatch day,
