Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

It's natural for some.
Was sitting out admiring the ducks in the pool when Penny (my RSL) ran as fast as she could and hopped in my lap. She was being chased by a rooster, and saw me as her protector. She did this twice in the same morning before I put her back in her proper pen.
There is nothing wrong with holding a chicken. If it likes to be held. Don't force it, but if she jumps in your lap, you don't have to kick her off.
thats same as my silkies and delaware

And there is nothing wrong with you protecting them. Nature is cruel. We don't have to be.

I do not encourage this, this comes naturally to them. I do not handle these guys. There are 19 and all are naturally curious. Should I prevent their mother from brooding because she doesn't scream and attack me when I enter the pen? No way! She is a wonderful mother! She protects them from what they need protection from. Not from the bringer of food.

whish my chicks liked me like that, I don't see why they don't, sweet annie dosen't mind me aslong as she knows im not up to something, she some how can tell when im just coming to see her and some times she knows its to catch the chicks. She dosen't protect them form my dog but my dog isn't a threat to them as he dosen't mind the hens (my dog is a Jack Russel) :)

Here is Koda standing guard. You should see him side step around all those chicks. He doesn't want to look at them, just in case the hen decides to attack. He is a trooper!
