Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I have a dog like that. Though a few of my broodies do attack them lol.

Here is Koda standing guard. You should see him side step around all those chicks. He doesn't want to look at them, just in case the hen decides to attack. He is a trooper!
That is sweet and funny at the same time.

I didn't have to train this dog with the chickens. Automatically a protector of them. He HATES other dogs and cats, so I was nervous. He has protected and guarded for a full year and I have no doubt in my mind that he would not touch a feather on their fluffy butts. I've even seen the chickens take over a plate of leftovers and him just back away.

God forbid a cat comes into our yard. Koda chases that cat so fast!

Our poodle likes the 'treats' they leave behind :sick

lol that sounds yummy my dog does that to lol

What breed is Koda?  Sounds like a good dog for me in the future!
He is part Corgi. I have no idea what else he has in him, but he has the corgi build. We were told black lab and beagle, so maybe that was the mother, and the father was corgi. :idunno

He is the best dog I've ever had. Turely.. I've had my fair share. I love how he is both a little dog and a big dog all wrapped up in one package. He weighs 35 pounds, and he runs just as fast as a lab. We were hoping to put him in agility, but he is 8, and gets sore if we run him too much.

Farmerboy - Just don't let your dog join your outdoor picnic. I've seen Chloe pick up chicken crap and eat it while I was enjoying a nice lunch.

ya thats what my pitbull does lol im like what a lovely snack lol

Hummm... Summer keeps tucking the broken shells back under her like she is still trying to hatch them. Is this normal? I have removed what shell bits I can get to (about 4 of the 6 eggs that have hatched) but could this cause problems?

I'm certain no one is saying 'don't have a broody who isn't mean' what is being said is being mean and grouchy and attacking you is kinda normal for a broody...that makes her a good one, not bad....she is protecting those chicks. Now hens that are very used to you may not attack you, animals certainly can be conditioned. My chickens are used to the dogs, but I can tell with my eyes closed when a dog is close to the hen house....everybody gets nervous...as they should. But I'm sure they would go after the dog given the chance....

I do not encourage this, this comes naturally to them. I do not handle these guys. There are 19 and all are naturally curious. Should I prevent their mother from brooding because she doesn't scream and attack me when I enter the pen? No way! She is a wonderful mother! She protects them from what they need protection from. Not from the bringer of food.
did anyone say you should? Great pic.
