Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Well, that question answered itself.

It had died. I opened the shell to see if I could figure out what happened. First thing I noticed was that it hadn't I eternally pipped. It went straight for an external pip. And the second thing I noticed was that it had an extra toe growing out of another toe. So probably some internal formation issues to go along with that.
So my hatch is complete. 6/8 for a first hatch isn't bad I think.

thats great!, my first hatch was 0/26.... and between then and my 9th hatch nothing, but on my 9th hatch 2 out of 10, there was more chicks but chick fell out the nest so the mother followed it...

exactly. A VERY good broody will protect her chicks from anything or anyone who moves too fast, gets too close etc.That doesn't mean one who will stand on you or let her chicks stand on you isn't good.  I have one broody who lets me walk right up to her and her chicks. She will run over my feet to get food. She is the exception to my broody's however, not the rule. 


    They are chickens with chicken reactions. It is nature and like people they are all different.

Yeah! Smokey hatched a chick. I haven't a clue which one I just heard a cheep sound and saw Smokey's feathers move a bit to flash a leg. So hoping its a Maran and a pullet. If its the blue egg that hatched I'm hoping at least one Maran hatches too.

Tomorrow is day 21. Topsy is still sitting tight and so far I have resisted the urge to lift their feathers to peek. But it's so hard!

Yes Smokey is the one who had the only egg I could see into. Her other three eggs and my silkie Topsy's three eggs are dark and I can't see in them. Smokey is the pullet in my avatar. She is the one brooding on the left side of the coop.

I havent posted in a while. Here is Wilma and her 4 chicks she hatched out of 9 in july. It was 110 for almost 2 weeks during her insistant brood. Sorry my finger is in some pics.

It's Day 21.

I saw a broken dark Maran egg this morning when I opened the coop - it wasn't the egg I was expecting to find broken so I'm happy! yeah!

Now I just have to hope that it's a pullet and not a cockerel. Can't wait to see the baby - hope Smokey lets it out. For now she's sitting tight and clucking that little one to stay put.

Still no action on Topsy's side.

hatched out some california white chicks yesterday - these were miracle chicks as most of the eggs were cracked due to shipping.. So they didn't go under the broodies until after hatch. Put most under my gigantic langshan and the rest under my EE mutt - and so far so good! One sacrificial chick was put out there last night under each hen and when both were alive this morning slipped the rest under.

They are clucking and acting motherly - hope nothing bad happens when they realize their chicks all look alike.
