Countrygirl, when my hens began I was so perplexed.Well, the nest now has 12 eggs in it and this morning when I went out to check on everyone around 9a.m., my Pekin was sitting on the nest! She stayed there the entire time I worked around the chicken coop but as soon as I got to her door and opened it, she got up and wanted to go out and free-range. So... I don't know if she will really sit on them or not... She seems kind of sporadic about it - but she did make a beautiful nest. It's dug fairly deep into the ground and lined with feathers. It also appears that she is messing with and/or turning the eggs as every time I go out to check them, they are all in different positions. I was numbering the eggs as she and the other girls laid them in there so I can keep track of age.
Marie! What a beautiful family!! OH MY I LOVE THIS!!
Countrygirl, when my hens began I was so perplexed. This being my first time I sat and watched them and then ran to BYC to ask tons of questions. LOL.....It took my girls several turning of the clutch...more laying and much confusion from me before I took Lydia's advice and realized she would sit when she has her clutch size. I thought it was the craziest thing when I would go out there and find the eggs in some other kind of fashion than I had seen them last. The coolest thing to watch is mama turning her eggs.![]()
Mine finally went full broody and I could tell because they got really 'moody', hissy and their poop!! ICK!!
Good luck!![]()
That is adorable, watch out for snakes.
I think if you calmly walk in there and pick up a couple of the eggs that aren't under her she probably won't make much of a fuss at all. But even if she did she isn't going to leave her nest. There are now 7 eggs that she isn't sitting on. It IS hot and humid here. Do you think she'd be ok if I took some and candled them?? I wouldn't want to mess anything up by making her move. Thanks for the help!
Okay, she is sitting on all of them again. Maybe she was just trying to cool them, as it recently did cool off here. I guess I'll just wait and watch....the suspense is killing me!I think if you calmly walk in there and pick up a couple of the eggs that aren't under her she probably won't make much of a fuss at all.
