Old fashioned Broody thread for ducks 2013 edition

A Mallard hatching goose eggs now that will be interesting, are you going to let her raise them too? My Muscovy hatched a gosling and he was taller than her by 5 weeks old. Looking forward to seeing pics.
I would like to let her keep them, but they will hatch a week later than the duck eggs. I may end up giving them to one of my geese, who has also gone broody, for the finale week since they are scheduled to hatch the same week as hers. I think it would be great though if Fatty could raise the goslings.

I am sick-- utterly sick-- I went straight into TSC, even rushed to get there before closing time, I bought 3 Pekin ducklings and gave them straight to my 2 Moms. Luckily for me, these 2 moms seem born to be mothers, and they eagerly accepted the ducklings right away! There are still 2 eggs in the nest and they looked good the last time I candled.

I don't think you're sick for getting some ducklings just after one died. :) I think its sweet you're rewarding your hard working girls for their efforts of bringing cute, fuzzy joy into this world.

Hopefully the other 2 come out soon!

I had a chance to clean out the nest, there were 4 unhatched egg and a dead ducklings in there. The 1 duckling that was having issues staying upright died the night I took those pictures. So she hatched 17 and currently 15 are alive and doing seemingly well. Mom is getting more protective. Lunging at my husband, dog, and me. Aren't the hens supposed to "sit" on the ducklings at night to keep em warm? She's just standing over them. Is this normal?

Maybe there is too many ducklings for her to cover them all, what breed is she again? I see your in Texas what are your temps?

Here is one baby with my two Moms, the mom on the left is sitting on 2 more babies from TSC, and 3 eggs also! They both want to sit on the eggs, I said "fighting" before, but I think that was a poor choice of word... rather, they are taking turns sitting on the eggs and they seem to be sharing duckling responsibilities. They are co-parenting! LOL And they each will cover up the other with straw! That is what you can see them doing in the pic. So far so good, but no peeps from the eggs, and as of today, we are at Day 37, so I expect the 3 adopted ducklings will be it.

On another note, my 3rd adult Pekin duck, she has been sitting on a handful of eggs too. She is not nearly as tolerant of me checking out her nest. She flaps her wings like mad, so violently that I was afraid she'd hurt herself. So this am, I saw one egg like nested inside of a broken, icky smelling egg (Looked unfertilized). I didnt do anything, but I'm going to have to... Any suggestions there? Thanks in advance!

Sweet pic H, so none of their own eggs hatched? thank goodness you went to TSC. and as for the other mama, you may want to pick her up and put her somewhere where she can'r hurt herself so you can check her eggs and remove the nasty one. They can sure be determined, or check out her remaining eggs and if nothing going on, another trip to TSC to make mama happy. Mama duck that is.
