Old fashioned Broody Thread for Ducks

Pics
For now they seem to be fine. Dudley is small (call duck) and has a deformed foot and Quackers, the mama, seemed to adopt her when they first moved in together. I did take Frick out and he's in a large pet crate for a few days until I can cobble together a pen for him. The pen is probably 90 square feet or so where the girls and babies are, and since Dudley has a clutch of eggs in there I don't want to move her/them just yet.

I will get pics as soon as I can. We're expecting thunderstorms so it's dark and right now she's on most of the babies and they are all darker colored so even when they pop out...yeah. Hard to see. I'm so excited! I counted at least seven little babies and she had at least 11 eggs under there when she started.

Very cool, yes don't move Dudley she may not like it. just keep and eye on things.. Just get pics when you can we just enjoy seeing the mamas and babies so much, and all the best on Dudleys hatch too.

We have babies!!

Our black female, Quackers, has been sitting on 11 eggs very patiently. Today I took the dogs out and when glancing in her pen saw a little black duckling run up and over her! We counted five or six and one was hatching as we watched!

Couple of questions--she shared a pen with her mate, Frick, and a female call duck named Dudley. I moved Frick out for now even though he was ignoring her and the babies. Is it safe for him to be in with Mama and babies or is it better for him to be a bachelor for a little while? Also, Dudley is tiny and gentle...and she has a clutch she's building. Is it safe for her to be in with Mama and babies?

Thanks!
I can only speak for my Drake Patrick. He is not a problem at all with the lil ones. They swim with him in the pool and some will stand under him when the tall scary guy (me) walks too close.

Congrats on the fuzzy butts!

Every time I go to get a pic of babe he is either walkiing or just laying down. It's pouring rain right now will try to get one later.. Today it was so sweet he and younger babe are now hanging out together.. So maybe if we do have a boy and hopefully a girl they will be bonded. My Opie who hatched last year has 3 girls and doesn't even try to mate with Ernies 4. and I haven't seen Ernie mating with Opies girls either. But I am not outside all the time so maybe there is some hanky panky going on I am not aware of. LOL Then we throw Sammy the gander into the mix, well ha hates Opies girls because he hates Opie[he is scared of Opie] but he does mate with Ernie girls[Ernie is respectful of Sammy] Sounds like a soap opera doesn't it.

It does.. as the duck world turns lol I know it's hard we have the same problem with ours, although my girls got a good head shot of it yesterday which i will upload i am still saying girl.. the head is super feminine. Honestly, you know your ducks.. trust your gut.. i kept thinking my pair of ducks last year were drakes but i was holding out hoping i was just inexperienced.. ha i was right all along.

I separate my ducks with babies at first.. definitely keeping drakes away, you can certainly re-intro them in another week or two.. my 4wk'er has been foraging with 3 drakes now over a week and all has been ok.

Well I am thinking boy so will say Drake, but thats okay he's a keeper. and still 5 more eggs to go. I'm thinking Ruthanns little rubber ducky is a girl, just looks like one. Looking forward to seeing Juniors pic. better come up with a better name. lol
