Is it normal for a broody duck to leave the nest for 3 or so hours? Mine just went broody yesterday, and she was away from the nest from 5:00-about 8:30. Should I treat her any different than usual? She is a KC, so I didn't expect her to go broody. Food 24/7 is not an option, she chose to nest in the goat pen and the goats cannot have duck food:) I gave her grain outside the fence, we have a gate she can get through, so I could have grain out there all the time. I also put a duck accessible water bucket near her.

my broody Runner did the same at 1st. She hatched 6 of 8 eggs. I noticed ducks get off the nest a lot more often than chickens do.

So we have an official head count, we have 9!

They seem to be doing well, eating and running about... noisy little suckers.. she still has about 4 eggs under her.. not sure, if they will produce much.. i will likely candle this weekend.

At the beginning, i think so at least that is what i found my girls did, as it drew closer to hatch date the time out was more quick, very structured like they knew they needed to return promptly.

I should add later on the ducklings will need feed 24/7 so you may have an issue if this location is impossible to provide feed/water.

I assume this is a good place to ask a question about letting a duck hatch duck eggs :)
I am thinking about getting a muscovy hen off craigslist to help me hatch shipped call duck eggs. Does anyone know how realistic it would be to try and pull this off? My earlier attempt at hatching eggs didn't go so well, so I want to try a broody.
Thanks,
Dwen
