Hi everyone,

I have a mixed age flock and one of my older girls has been struggling for quite some time. But recently I’ve noticed she is not moving much, sleeping a lot, and doing this thing with her neck that almost seems like she has something stuck in her throat. She also keep spitting up some sort of mucus that’s either been clear or brownish. And she just spit out a lot every where. I’ve never given antibiotics, I don’t know what to get and I just don’t want her to suffer any more. Help please.

To me it sounds like she may be suffering from sour crop that could be related to a reproductive disorder. Sour crop can result from a long standing impacted crop infection. I have lost a few to the same thing, and when I performed a home necropsy, have found internally laid lash egg material, cancer, and ascites. Has your hen lost weight? Here are some articles on how to treat crop disorders with antifungal creams, Medistatin powder, coconut oil, and stool softeners:

Thank you so much for that. I have a feeling it is sour crop. I didn’t realize this was a thing and she goes back and forth with feeling lively and being sick. I think my best bet is to bring her inside and keep her warm and comfortable till she is ready.

I have been successful with getting her to “vomit” but I’m not sure how many times I’m supposed to do that. And the stuff coming out of her mouth is more like a brown water than a mucus texture.
