Older hen diarrhea, laying down, smells like ammonia, etc. Please Help

I'm so sorry she is not doing well

If she seems to be in pain, then it's kinder to let her go. I agree with @Engine823 if you are not able to do it yourself then check with other vets to see if they can assist you. I'm still blown away at the $$ amount the vet quoted.

Do you have a father, husband, neighbor or friend that could do it for you. It's hard to do, but sometimes we have to take hold of our emotions and take care of business ourselves. No method is easy, but the broomstick method or cervical dislocation, at least for me, is the quickest way.

Thank you all for the support. I finally got ahold of the local animal shelter & they put her to sleep for me. I cried when I made the decision, but now I feel better. Now she's in peace. The girl at the shelter said she could feel some eggs inside her, so maybe she had some internal laying going on. It didn't look like it to me because she looked so skinny. Must've been painful. They were so nice. They brought her out wrapped in a pretty towel with some pretty plants even taped to it. We buried her just now under the tree outside. I will miss her, but I feel relieved to know she is at peace and pain-free in chicken heaven. She's standing the third from the left in my profile pic, back in her younger years.

I was just reading through your thread...I'm sorry for your loss. She is in a better place now. Sometimes we just have to do what is best for our critters.

I'm sorry! That must have been hard, but I'm glad she's not in pain anymore, and neither are you. I'm so happy you were able to find a nice place to give her up, and she was with people who cared.

Thanks. I feel kind of guilty though for keeping her going so long. She was probably in pain for a while especially after she stopped roosting and then I had her inside for a couple weeks. Including a week waiting for vet results that weren't really any help anyway. Toward the end she mostly wouldn't even open her eyes. I had her wrapped in a towel when I took her to be put down & she was so still I had to check if she was even breathing. Maybe all my "helping" just prolonged her suffering. Poor girl

If you had put her down right away, you may have still felt guilty wondering if you
could of/should of done more. At least now you do know that you tried. She received extra attention, comfort and love in her last days and that is what matters.
