Funny story: When my DH worked as a naturalist at a nature center, an elderly woman called the center to ask if they would take her pet bobcat. She had found it in the wild as a kitten and hand-raised it, but it had finally become too much for her to handle. They told her "Sure, bring it on out."
The woman arrived with her daughter and a large pet carrier. DH peeked inside to see a huge male brown tabby. He said, "Um, ma'am, this isn't a bobcat. It's just a big feral domestic cat." She insisted that it was a bobcat, even when he pointed out the long tail. "Oh, bobcats are born with long tails," she said, "but the mothers bite them off when they're small."
The daughter took DH aside and told him that the family had tried for years to convince Mom that her big, mean cat was just a cat, and would he please just humor her so she would finally give the thing up? DH did, the woman and her daughter went away relieved, and the cat went to the shelter.
I had never heard of the American Short Hair Bob either - - - I called my friend today for info. I just left her a voice mail to e-mail me a photo of her cat and to ask for measurements.
That is a funny story about the "bobcat."
