OMG!!! First Game Cam pic ever. Huge Funny thread

I studied mountain lions for a year in college (they were going to be my study animal for my thesis, until it became clear that I wouldn't be seeing/handling many, if any, cats but lots and lots of poop); this looks to me like a juvenile mountain lion. First and second year cats are more likely to come to areas frequented by people, especially where water is available. After you set up some sort of security system, you should set out a big tray of wet sand near the pond, and see if you can get some tracks! Very nice wildlife cam shot!

Ooooo I think it is always exciting to see what you can catch with those cams.

I would say that there is a Mountain Lion.

They are very beautiful creatures and an electric fence would probably be your best bet to keep him away from your chickens. You will need something strong. He probably really likes your property with that pond there and an easy drink and occasional fish. I know everything in the desert comes to our pond for a drink or a fish.

I'm not completely sold as to what it is...

Some of the characteristics seem different than that of a mountian lion... I'm still on the fence on this one.

Wow super great pic. I am scared to get a camera because of what I may see. I live on the creek and have seen

Bobcat, coyotes, foxes and all the usuall critters. There has been talk of a mountain lion near here.

Amazing!!!! be sure you keep your critters safe.

Yup looks like a young cougar (aka mountain lion or puma)

We get those here in town all the time. Even near the schools during school hours. We also get bear in town. There is around 6,000 people where I live.. I saw a young mountain lion have a domestic cat penned against a sliding glass door.. I was at a friends house and we heard a loud noise so looked outside. Scared it away and the pet kitty was ok but hated the outdoors after that..

From the perspective of the chair behind it, I would guess it's about 15"- 18" at the shoulder. The ear profile does not look like that of a cougar. It has a more pointed, bobcat-like appearance to it, but the tail seams to be a bit too long. It also seems to have cheek tufts like a bobcat. If it's a cougar, it's so small I'd be surprised if it wasn't still with it's mother. Create a muddy area and look for tracks. The track of a large cougar are very easy to identify. If I was forced to guess, I'd say bobcat with very light markings. It's the right size.

I have seen bob cats and the tail is too long in my opinion, but I have also seen feral crosses that can get bigger than a bob cat if the forage is good in the area. Just my humble opinion.
