OMG...I am Shocked!!!

The 4H group around here hatched out about 300 broilers last year. How do I know this? LOL Because the local farmer was telling me how his wife said she was "bring some 4H chicks home" and before he knew it a truck rolled down the driveway with about 300 broiler birds sitting in it. LOL

The farm couple raised them up to a good size and then sold them off for about $5 a bird. He sold out of them too. They were kept past their prime processing age. It didn't stop the local latino population, they would pull up and buy 4-10 of them just like they were at the grocery store.

The couple probably made a little bit of money off of those birds. Just thought I'd throw that in there for anyone close enough to a 4H program doing the same thing. If I had space I would do it! 300 birds for free? Sure! Just throw 'em in the back of the truck.. LOL

I'm sure Adam's face would be similar to the Farmer's when his wife rolled down the driveway with all those chicks.

I don't really see a problem with this. The cat's got to eat, and it's not like the birds will be tortured. This way, the birds don't ONLY feed the cats but they ALSO get to educate students first.

However if a student has the set up for chickens and their parents ok it, then I think they should be allowed to get first pick.

I'm not saying anything against poeple who raise animals for food...as long as they treat them well...I just don't think kids are ready to deal with that. Heck, I'm almost 30 and I'm not ready. I know everything has to eat..circle of life and all, but not for a school project. My son is in love with the chicken he picked out...unfortunately a cornish x. That doesn't mean we are going to eat him. We take him for walks everyday and give him lots of hugs and affection.

I just have to put my 2 cents in! I realize the kids probably (hopefully) don't know what will happen to these chicks, but if we are looking at this from an educational standpoint, what is this teaching our children?? That we can use creatures for our amusement and education then discard them when they cease to be useful? or become inconvenient? Not sure really what to think about this. I think it is a great experience for kids to be able to witness a hatch, but you would think there would be a better way to handle the outcome. I realize there are many worse things that happen to birds than being "humanely euthanzied", but in this particular instance it just seems very wasteful. Anywho...just my opinion (and keep in mind I am a chicken and children lover...haha)

If they were being killed and thrown in the trash, I'd say wasteful... but here I think they are serving two purposes. Teaching kids... and feeding zoo animals which would have to get food some how anyways. At least these chicks did some education before becoming feed, rather than just being shipped to the zoo in a box and fed directly.

And for 4h liability... if they get all the chicks like that, no kid living in an apartment will end up with a lone rooster being fed bread.

I don't see a problem either. I see this as a positive from all sides. I love my birds, but I also have snakes, dogs, cats, fish, etc. Circle of life.
