OMG I hate 4-H project books!

Quote:
True awards time is nice. And my boys did well. Even brought home a BEST OF SHOW in both poultry and herpetology. My main complaint wasn't the work so much as the knowing how much it all actually costs.

I'm investing in a child, not a show chicken or a robotics kit. Those are but means to an end which is to produce the most well rounded, competent, self-reliant, confident adult I can possibly manage.

Letting them sit on their behinds all day playing computer games, watching television, or hanging out at the local whatever is cheap. But it won't get them to where they need to go.

I count pennies on the birds that I buy that I expect to pay for themselves and make a profit too. But I don't count the cost of my girl's birds. They're an investment of an entirely different sort.

You get out of 4-H what you are willing to put into it and the money is the lesser part of it.

I don't disagree with any of this. All of our birds are project birds (75) and all the reptiles (6) and 1 pig. I try to think of it as just learning and the kids really do love all the animals and 4-H (I do too) I just don't love knowing the actual $$$$.

We've been so busy we haven't been to a meeting yet and haven't gotten the boys books back yet. We don't get awards like that but it would be totally awesome!

Congrats on your son's project book!

I used to hate doing them, but I always left the hardest parts for last minute. I always thought they were a great resource though!

Debbie, where are you a 4-H leader? I'm a leader of a club in North Jersey. More specifically, in Warren County.

I'm a mean, mean, MEAN parent. I do NOTHING with the project books. The kids do everything for them. They do ask for information or whatever, but I do nothing to fill them out.
