OMG, I killed a chick!

It's sad to look at a squished chick

If it makes you feel better about it I'll tell you that my broody hen hatched her chicks last night and 4 of them were squished

. She must have sat right on them!

Oh, Kathy,I am so sorry. Remember that blue cochin I bought when we went to the breeder's? I was cleaning out the coop yesterday and apparently he had hidden behind a feed barrel and I propped in the inside door open when I was finished cleaning (door between the two coop rooms and right beside the feed barrels) well, I guess I caught his head between the feed barrel and the back side of the door and broke his neck. I found him when I was about to put the chickens up for the night. Made me sick to be responsible for that!!!

OMG, I did the SAME EXACT THING with a red feeder and my first batch of day old chicks, one of my white Silkies.

I am still completetly horrified. I have NO idea how it could have happened either. I was being SO careful not to bump any of them around and was so diligent about keeping their living quarters perfect for them...it still mystifies me to this day that it could have happened. You're not alone. Sorry for your loss.

That is why I am so careful .... because I read about this! Well, I thought I was careful. Like you, I am mystified how it happened!

Maybe sonew is right .... maybe it was already dead when I put the feeder down. Heck, I don't know. I just hate it that it is dead! I waited months for the eggs to hatch these special chicks, and now I am down to 6. Darn it!

DONT FEEL SO BAD THESE THINGS HAPPEN . I JUST DID IT TO A POLISH CHICK I HAD IT IN MY HAND AND WASNT PAYING ATTENTION AND IT JUMPED RIGHT OUT OF MY HAND AND INSTANTLY DIED THAT LEFT ME WITH A LONELY POLISH CHICK.

I CALLED MY FRIEND SHE TOLD ME THAT SHE CRUSHED ONE THAT HAD JUMPED OUT AND GOT LOOSE AND SHE CRUSHED IT. SO SHE SAID YOU WILL HAVE THIS .

Aaaw, Kathy! Don't feel bad, accidents happen all the time.

I one time squished one of my grown birds underneath a large piece of plywood. I guess the wind had blown it over and she didn't move out of the way in time. Well I had no idea where she was when I went to close the coop up that evening, so I went around the property calling for her... I didn't realize that she was underneath the wood until I walked over it a couple times and the board started clucking!

I felt terrible, like the worst chicken owner in the world! The poor thing's comb was all smashed over to one side and she could hardly walk. I thought for sure she was going to die. But she pulled through it and is still with me today. I now call her Squishy.

If you want, you can have one of my 60+ chicks.
