Sorry you are going through this. My thoughts to you and the little one.

i put it under the lamp and it got better..chirping, circling, etc. i gave it the beak dip in water. swallows ok.. but i think the neck is the issue.. back to gasping, eyes closed, etc.

ill wait til tomoorow.. i hope there will be some improvement. will try massage also

Give it a little bit of time, but don't make it suffer.

I always look at it like this: if I was in that position and knew that there wasn't going to be anything but suffering, no happy ending just hours and hours of possible pain/discomfort (either to just die anyway or spend my life like that), what would I want? And the answer is, I would want someone to 'pull the plug' so to speak. Let me try again next life. It seems awful to kill something cute and fluffy at first, but eventually you'll learn 2 things: first, to consider its pain first and your guilt second and second, in situations like these, culling is a bigger mercy than letting it suffer *hugs* Sorry! I will hope it straightens itself out very soon, but it doesn't look good.

oh i know, i understand and i agree.. its an irrational fear of mine. i cant even touch a dead animal without having a heart attack.

now.. people... im alright with.. yes, im possibly demented.

im going to work on massaging the neck, ive given it some vitamins. if i see improvement ill go from there, but as it is now there is no way it can eat and drink by itself.

Get some Poly-viSol WITHOUT iron infant vitamin drops. They work wonders. Please don't cull the poor baby just because of the neck, until you know for sure that it won't fix itself.

Also, don't freak about the extra toes. That just means there is an extra toe gene being carried by the parents that got passed on to Igor.

Good luck!

I agree on the poly vits. I had a beautiful little lavender Ameraucana hatch with wry neck. She kept flinging her head back and falling on her back. Gave her polys for 2 days and she was right as rain. Just keep your little one warm and comfy.

Do you have poly-vi-sol -- this chick looks like it hatched with wry-neck. It needs vitamins and a few days. It troubled itself to hatch -- I would not be quick to cull. Vitamins and a few days.

yes thats what ive been giving igor.

the actual bone feels kinked. Is that what wry neck feels like?

the toes are also curling under.. not that they are atrophied, just thats what he seems to do with them. could the vits help with that too?

i put him in a little cardboard box in the brooder for his own safety from the others and so he doesnt drown on accident, etc. its hard to get liquids in without affects. i dont want to try solids until i see what is going to happen.

thank you.

I regret to report that when i went to the brooder to check up on Igor, he/she had passed away. He was very active and chirping and i honestly didnt think he was in any pain, more frustrated at not being able to control his or her head. I massaged and held his neck for a long while and it seemed to be a little better, he was able to sit on his hocks and hold his head up.

Too bad.

too much handling while it is so young can stress them out or just do them harm since they are so small. also, they don't need to be taught where the water and food is straight out of the bator. i am sorry for your loss but it is part of raising chicks that will have to be overcome eventually. are you sure one of your chickens might not be a faverolles? looks just like one as a chick!

better luck with future hatchers
