OMG THE FLIES!

I use a granulated fly bait. Put into small containers under milk crates and it keeps the reg house flys at bay.

Alright I am in need of some serious help! I have tried DE, the permethrin, the captivators, fly bags...EVERYTHING!!! The flies in my run are horrible and now they’re flowing into my coop! I’m terrified that my flock is going to get fly strike! My run is not completely covered, I have a shaded part due to the crazy hot temps lately. The ground is bare but I have been trying to cover it and have even thought of moving them to a new area or fencing in the entire side yard to give them more area. How can I get rid of these crazy annoying flies?!

What is the floor in your run? Is it just dirt?

It was full grass when the run first went up but they’ve completely destroyed it now. I try to put straw and the wood pellet dust down but as soon as it rains it’s all ruined. At the moment it is just dirt aside from the grass i throw into the run

you need something heartier to deter the flies from landing and laying eggs. I live the pellet dust in the winter, but in the spring/summer/fall the straw holds water and the pellet dust degrades too quickly.

Try the deep mulch method for your run. Use the larger pine shavings from the farm store, not the fine stuff. If you can get it 3 inches thick you will deter the flies. The shavings dry out the droppings and their fluffy nature doesn't hold the moisture. The flies don't like laying eggs in it.

The ONLY time I have had trouble with flies was when I Spring cleaned the run in preparation for new shavings, cleaned it down to dirt, and then went to the farm store for shavings and they were out. I went a week without shavings and only a dirt floor. WORSE case of flies ever! LOL. As soon as the shavings went down again, the flies were gone.

Thanks! Is there a specific brand I should be looking for? I know that sounds dumb but the only “farm store” I live near is TSC. Not trying to be rude but some of their employees have given me false information when it came to my flock...just wanna make sure I get the right thing. There for awhile we had weeks of rains so that’s another reason my run has dried up...the ducks love to make mud holes...

Whatever they carry. Tsc is fine. Where are you? Nebraska here. Land of too much and too little of everything!

Regular shavings not fine. About 5$ for a big cube of it. Usually plastic wrapped and outside by the doors.

I use 3 bales in 200 ft when i clean and add all fresh to 200 sq feet. I add more as it breaks down.

I remove all in mid october and add fresh. And again mid april. I also remove compost that they, it, and the worms have made to the hot pile of the compost bin. Black gold!
