What a terrible loss for both families. I live in NW CT and most people here would not run for a gun so much as a phone to call the local sheriff to handle it. But a dog that is killing 17 chickens is not just making one little mistake, it is killing in excess, and would return. My mother has a neighbor whose dog just ran a mile away and killed a free-range chicken, and the owners had to pick it up from the pound. Now they are trying to "train" it to stay in the yard -- no fencing, no leashes. Its ridiculous. The poor dog was hit by a car last year, they are just clueless. All their dogs have always wandered, but this is the first one that has gone and killed something.

I let my own chickens free-range, and if anything kills them, I know that is my own fault, whether it is a car, a dog, or a hawk. I know that their quality of life is better while they are alive, and that is what matters to me.

How about 2 letters, one to the parents explaining what their boys are doing, and the other to the boys explaining what we'll do if things don't change? Just got off the pnone with my husband and he left a message with the receptionist to have CA call him at work, or me at home. CA may be in court this morning. So, we'll see....

Actually make copies and send it to both the parents and the adult kids. that way both basis are covered.
this way there can be no mistakes on their part the meaning of what can and will happen if they pursue any more harassing actions.


Years back I had a neighbor whose dog was repeatedly loose and would chase my horse all around her enclosed paddock ( electric and wood fence both).
One morning the horse got tired of the chase and run situation , turned on the dog and killed it. ( Golden Retriever)
The Police were called and they tracked down the owner who came to retrieve the dog, nasty threats were made in front of the Officer.The one threat that particularly struck me as off the wall was the owner of the dog was going to sue me because my horse stomped his dog to death in her own paddock!
I looked at the Officer and he looked at me, I think my mouth was as wide open as his was. I was totally taken back.
The Officer politely informed the dog owner he didn't have a leg to stand on and to remove his dog from the paddock and that he would be held responsible for and injuries to the horse, vet bills and farrier costs due to chipped and broken hooves. It amounted to nearly $1500.00
The owner was livid and for months he would act like your going through , after many calls to the police and pictures it was finally put an end to.
I have since left that town and live in an area where neighbor dogs are less a threat.
we occasionally get a stray, dump off or such but its becoming less and less frequent.
now if only I could stop pregnant cat drop offs.

Your DD learned a lesson. The lesson that bad things can happen to good people. Now she will learn to either stand up for what is right or how to be a doormat. I'm glad you are teaching her that she shouldn't be a doormat. Now the dog's family needs a learning experience. Having them take financial responsibility for their negligence will teach them to be more responsible in the future. The dog getting loose may have been an accident, but there was still negligence. Think of it like a car accident. Nobody wanted it to happen, but somebody is still responsible.

Hang in there. You have done nothing wrong. Irresponsible dog owners put you you in a difficult position. You had to choose between the safety of your daughter and her pets and the safety of a mean dog that should not have been out. Your neighbors are idiots.
