Hello Lickskillet's Daughter... I'm so proud of your bravery! This is a terrible thing you have been through, and there is no doubt that your Papa did the right thing. How are your other chickens doing today? It sounds like you take amazing care of them. We're sure sending hugs to your whole family.

I can see the pics, Lickskillet... You live in a beautiful place! Somehow it breaks my heart for you and your family all over again. Please see my other post about law enforcement involvement... I really think it's a good idea to do chat with them now rather than later, before your neighbors spin out of control, as they seem bound and capable. Somehow the calm presence of an officer of the law sets things back on heels - and takes the weight off of you. I read that you did file a report with the police, I hope you follow up to be sure they have gone to talk with the family. Generally they will call you to follow up...

Gosh, I'm sure sorry. Lovely that your DD is here as a member. The folks here are generally so kind, it's a good safe way for her to be able to find solace with a community that understands.

I put away dogs before for chasing, killing, etc. my livestock.

However no one knew. They (dogs) just come up missing. Just let the law enforcement handle this all the way. This is real touchy and could get nasty, but lets hope not. Let the police do any talking that may come between the two parties, this will help. Lets hope for the best!

Sorry for your loss. I have chickens and I also have dogs that have killed some of my chickens. I love my dogs and I love my chickens. I know that if my dogs get out and wander from our fenced property that all of my neighbors have the right to protect themselves, pets, and property with lethal force. I would not hold it against them if they felt they had to put one of my dogs down. I just hope that my dogs do not cause harm to others(people, livestock, & pets) when they get out. I will not hesitate to dispatch any theatening animal that shows up on my property that is dangerous to my family and property. Ultimately it would be my fault if my dog(s) get out and cause harm. I think that their are to many people today with unrealistic views of their rights/ responsibilities to their animals. If it is in the act of predation or aggressive towards someone or something and not on it's owners property an individual has ever right to "take action". I know this subject has gotten alot of attention, but it's a real problem for anyone with livestock / pets.

OK...I guess I need a brain vitamin. You said the chickens were in their run and not in the yard. Did the dog reach through the chain link fence to kill the 17? Did he get inside of the run?

I'd put up the motion sensor lights, or a game camera, get as much documentation as possible and watch out for the 18+ year old predators. Those sound like the ones you have to worry about.

No they were around the outside of the coop and run free ranging at the time of the raid, but some ran back INTO the run thinking they would be safe in there, the gates were open for them to come and go (to get to their waterers etc.) So I had dead chickens inside the run, coop and outside the run. Did I explain that better?

Also, the dog did pull some through the chain link/chicken wire. I used the shop vac and sucked up all of the feathers, and hosed off the chicken wire then put it back around the chain link(it is not skirted, but will be soon). It really was terrible.

I cant believe the ducks that DD hatched all made it, they must have been able to shimmy under the coop, they don't have their flight feathers in yet. I wish the chickens would have thought of it...

Also after the horn blaring last night, there was no more problems. Hopefully today will be better in that regard.

I agree, and have to keep reminding mysef that! The chickens didn't go looking for trouble.
