I have a question though.. Do people not fence their propertys in the u.s very often?

I know my yard is fenced, although, not as well as I'd like. Maybe once I win the lottery or something :)
I have had a huge problem with stray/loose dogs actually going under, over and through my fence. One of them actually tore through the chain link. Maybe it's the breeds that predominate here or the lack of care in the mixing of bloodlines, combined with improper socialization/training/confinement. IDK, but it's a huge problem here. Not just livestock, but also the loss of limb and life to humans. It's ridiculous, dogs were bred to be companions of man, but because of man (and I actually mean 'humankind - not men in general, don't get offended guys! lol), dogs are becoming a nusance instead of a joy. I love dogs more than most people (BYCer's excluded, I love ya'll like I love dogs) but in the past several years, I have had no choice but to dispose of 5 uncontained menacing dogs. Each and every one of them haunts me to this day.
Lickskillet, I so feel badly for you all, your DD having to witness this and your poor DH that had to cull that dog. And you for having to watch your DD's heart break. What a horrible experience for you all.
I hope for healing for all of you.
My sympathies and best wishes for you all.

Wow I am so sorry for the loss of your chickens and the mental damage to your daughter. Even though I am a dog lover and have one of my own. I would not treat you like that if that was my dog. I love my dog but I also know that some dogs are not nice to chickens/livestock. Mine is just at a year and he does good with my Muscovy ducks. He tries to get to them and when he puts his nose to close to their pen they bite him and he runs away lol.

If I was your neighbor and my dog killed your chickens, and you then killed my dog. YEah I would be ticked and hurt that it happened. But mostly because I could not stop my dog from getting loose. In no way would I think you or your family were bad people for taking my dogs life because he killed your chickens. I would also pay for any damage that happened that my dog did (been there done that already- no animals harmed just property damage)......Some people just have no clue on the real world and how they are supposed to act towards eachother. I hope your daughter will be ok I know its hard to witness something like that. In the end she will be stronger. I hope the neighbors in question does the right thing and appoligise for their dog killing your chickens and I hope they leave your family alone.

Hi everyone, we have had no other problems with the neighbors, so maybe like another op stated the kids only were at the bottom of the harrassment and the parents caught wind. Or maybe other neighbors have had something to say to them. I don't know. But for now all is quiet around here. Some good news for DD, she had eggs in her bator, and 2 have hatched. So she will have her hands full with the little ones later today. We installed motion lights yesterday evening, and have a baby monitor in the coop now. These are good things to have done regardless of the neighbors. We have agreed that we are going to put ALOT of sand in their run and make the run bigger so that they don't have to come out of the run to have clean feet. Lol And we are going to put a solid roof over run as well, to keep the sand dry. We appreciate all of the well wishes and "hand holding" through this, as we were not sure what to do about alot of what happened. Hopefully this thread has enlightened and someone has gained more knowledge about how to protect what's theirs, I know we have!!! And your rights. Just wanted to say that BYC is AWESOME and the people and mods that reply to people like me don't have a clue as to how helpful and appreciative your replies are!!! Thanks for being there!!
Sincerely, OUR Family

I'll post if anything else happens of any kind!
BTW, the sherriffs office called yesterday to say they contacted dispatch and have a patrol car driving by more often (I saw it pass three times yesterday)lol Normally you might see one once a month! YEAH!

So glad to hear y'all are doing better and the extra steps taken to provide a more safe enviroment for them will no doubt pay off. Having the baby monitor will alert y'all to the first hint of any trouble and someone can get out their quick. I told my husband last month when we started building our coop that I will be getting a baby monitor...

Congrats to the baby chicks!

i would have done the same if not worse. i've shot many a dog that attacked my chickens, and YOU DESERVE COMPENSATION! and how terrifying it must have been for your daughter!

i can't imagine how scared and shocked she must have been. no child, or person for that matter, should have to see their beloved pet be slaughtered by a bloodthirsty creature.

I am never as upset as i am when a dog kills my birds. i love them, they are my babies from day one til the end of time! it's good to hear that you haven't had any more problems with them. i had someone arrested for slashing the tires of my car after i shot her dog (who killed my favorite roo, my son, Shenanigan) all after the cops scolded them for letting their dog loose in town, which is illegal here. i caught her in the act of destroying my property!

another time i called the cops on someone for killing my chickens after i shot his dog, again after the cops scolded him for letting his dog run loose. the kid killed 3 of them before i caught him. he tried to run but my boyfriend caught him and held him down until the cops came and arrested him. he was stabbing them with a pocket knife, letting them die slowly! he got a good while in jail for it too.

i would watch your neighbors kids. watch them good.

i could tell you a million stories about a million times i've had people arrested or otherwise punished for "revenge" on me for killing their dogs. i haven't received any compensation from these people, who think chickens are dumb animals with no feeling. i can't stand this town! hopefully, soon i can move away from here, back to the village i come from where people take care of their dogs and protect them from one another. a lot of people there have chickens, too. i really miss my uncle's birds, they are a big bunch of feathered sweethearts, aside from the evil roo that his sons have affectionately named Dr. Satan

I have 4 dogs and everywhere I have lived, we fence immediately if not already fenced. This is, first and foremost, for the safety of my dogs and secondly, out of respect for other peoples property. I have real nasty neighbors that hate my chickens and my dogs and I know if my dogs set one foot on their property, they'd be shot.
