On Bumping Your Own Posts...within Minutes

Here are my rules on threads asking for help:

1-Read it twice.
2-Try and empathize with the poster.
3-Ask myself "did they make any effort to find the answer or are they lazy. I also look at the amount of posts. A new member asking for help should ALWAYS be helped. A member with 300 posts asking a basic question with no legwork on their own gets ignored.

The search feature and the vastness of BYC history makes searching very difficult. Many times I will do a search and then post the link in response. It only takes me a second or two. I see a lot of people doing this too.

Finally, always click on "Unanswered posts" and see if anything important has fallen to the bottom.

Often I will respond with a simple suggestion hoping some of the real pros here will see the thread and respond.

For some strange reason a lot of people, besides moderators, follow me into threads.

Oh, Buff & Joe, you are both extremely sexy people. I'd read your posts anytime.

People get scared when something goes wrong...sometimes panic ensues. I wonder how many times in a day a doctor or veterinarian gets asked the same question? It's comforting to have someone knowledgeable to turn to for advice in times of need. Even if some find it annoying. Sometimes a sympathetic reply is welcome, too. Advice doesn't always have to be impersonal.

Hey at $50 a question I would answer all the repeat questions and have a smile on my face at the end of the day too.

So True. I wonder how many new members have left BYC because they felt ignored, when they really needed help.
I try to bump with a link or a suggestion. And I get PMs and emails thanking me. It takes a while to get used to BYC. I lurked for months before joining and still find out things.

Imp- I kinda like the repeat questions. I actually know an answer.

I honestly don't think there are many people who are ignored. I look at unanswered posts several times a day and very few emergencies don't get responses. Most of the unanswered are in Buy/Sell/Trade or random.

Like you said, a bump(not really a bump) with a link or suggestion does help out a lot, if not to let the person know we care.

Ditto on the repeat question thing. It is nice to know some answers isn't it?

You know about that?!

Yup, I know. It's sort of the same thing as people who watch the guy run naked across the football field or slow down to look at the dead possum on the side of the road.

This is why Joe and I follow you into threads Purple. We're hoping for gratuitous flattery.

I like this attitude and it's the reason I keep coming back to BYC.

today I will ignore those questions and let them wonder

Glad everyone doesn't have this attitude.

First, I only take that attitude on days that end in Y.

If your gonna quote, maybe learn how to quote, giving the original person credit for saying such nice thing, or not so nice things.

go to post you want to quote from and hit the quote button in the bottom right corner, that will automatically open a Message window where you can take out the parts you dont want people to read. Such as the part that I already answered the same questions 3 time in the last 24 hours.

MarlinChaser,
I know how to use the quote button, but I appreciate you kindly explaining the process to me anyway. However, since I was quoting two different posters, I was not able to do it as you suggested.
