What, if anything, should I see if I decide to make the poke?

Well if you make a tiny hole you won't see nothing. If you open a bigger hole, you'll either see membrane with a beak out or the head out. Moiston the membrane and see if you see veins. If you see blood, stop.

If you feel you need to add a teeny hole, you can. I have used a thumbtack to make button quail pips before. Just go slow and gently, not much force. Don't want to smash egg.

Yes, I know! The few times I did it, I was shaking the whole time because I was afraid I was going to stab or smash the egg/chick! Lol

Thumbtacks work great for bitty eggs. I just scratch a small x over and over until its thin enough to gently poke thru

I scratched a tiny hole in the shell but didn't break membrane because baby started wiggling the egg like crazy!!!!
