Once and for all Coon Deterrents PLEASE

Agree with the others hardware cloth and electrified wiring around the perimeter of coop and run.Raccoons are horrible predators, they will bite off any body part they can pull through fencing.

Don't bother with trapping them unless you plan to kill them. Relocating is against the law in many areas and just puts the problem elsewhere. Dead raccoons don't kill chickens.

Prob not rabid tho. Rabbies kills in days Utube it u will see its pretty distinctive.

Trap them and shoot them or just sit up with a strong flashlight and a .22 with a scope or a shotgun with #6 shot. A dead coon will not kill chickens.

I guess u didnt read the part about being in long island... NY aint a fly over state where u shoot shovel. U shoot a gun in LI your going to jail. Simple.

Use a double fencing system, its best. That's why prisons, military bases everywhere that needs security uses two fences.

Alternatively if u dont want to spend a lot of $$ you could just go buy a trap set it next to your hen house put some bait in there and just continually have a trap that will be an easier target then the hens... now what to do with the animal when you have a trapped that's entirely up to you.

You can also put a mets jersey in the cage once they see the hens are mets fans they will realize its not even worth there time!!! :lau

AGREED! trap them...they are vermin! I had one pull a hen right through the wire fence, killing her as he pulled her through. I have no use for raccoons...no the mink that suffered "lead poisoning". I will protect my birds with a vengeance.:old

Most often, daytime sightings, at least this time of the year are sows trying to keep up with the feeding of her kits. She will be on her feet looking hard for food wherever she can find it and your coop has proven to be fruitful. They'll be back until you have no birds and then continue to check periodically even if you don't have anything.

Others have said good things. No chicken wire. Welded wire is good. You can go the route of all hardware cloth but it's pricey. You'll have to layer wire such as rat wire or hardware cloth if you do welded wire or chain link, at least around the base a foot and a half or two high so nothing can reach greedy fingers through and pull apart your birds. You'd think the birds would move away from the sides but raccoons will actually work as a team to scare them to one side where others are waiting to grab.

Electric fencing is great.. I know it sounds like a lot of effort but it really is simple and relatively cheap. Watch videos on YouTube on how to setup a few wires. That's what I did and if I can do it, so can you! It won't disappoint. I use a solar powered unit and have touched the wire on multiple occasions on accident ( and was sorry! ). If it walloped me, I can't imagine being barefoot with a wet nose.

Trap them and club them to death, shoot 'em with a bow and arrow, douse 'em with gas and burn 'em... etc. There are plenty of ways to kill a coon besides shooting it. If you live in a lib-tard state just get creative. Long pigsticker knives work pretty well. If you are the crafty type you could design your own coon killing device. Beaver kill- traps can work well. Leg traps and ball bats, a little messy but gets the job done. I don't relocate and release. I deal with predators once. Once and for all.:yesss:

I trap and humanely kill coons and suggest doing the same to your pests too but.. Be careful. A neighbor sees this and doesn't like it and you're gonna face some nasty fines and unwanted publicity over measly vermin.

I shoot 'em, and my closest neighbor is 1/2 a mile away and he shares my views on chicken killers. I was suggesting methods for folks who live in places where they have been forced to give up some of their freedom, or have to give a crap what their neighbors like or don't like. Where I live, you have the right to protect your livestock by lethal means. I wouldn't live in a city or sub-division for any amount of money, because freedom is compromised. I'l stick with the rural parts of the country. We're still free and independent around here. God, Guns, and Freedom, that's America.:old
