Obviously I'm new to this. I have six chicks all feathered out but have always had a regular light bulb for heat so they were eating and drinking all night, so I assume. They've been in the basement but I want to move them out to the coop asap. Can they just start going all night now in the dark without food or water? Silly I know, but these are really pets and I love my pets! Thanks!

Yes, they will be fine. They do not need light, they might be a litte nervous since chickens don't like change but they will be alright. i just turned off my 3 week old heat lamp. They now roost all night. So, theyy dont need food or water at night. my 6 week old chicks are in the main coop and roost all night. Their food and water is in the run.

Mine roost all night without light from 2 days old on now, at least the last 3 batches of chicks do. But last year's chicks were a different story. I started turning off the heat lamp and the room light when they were 5 weeks old, preparing them to go out to the coop. They didn't mind not having the heat, but threw a royal chicken sized temper tantum when the room slowly darkened with the sunset and nobody came in to turn on the light! They got over it - they always do. It's not that they don't like the dark, it's more like curious chickee said, they don't like change.
