We are new to this... bought us six red sex-link chicks ranging from the ages of 1-2 weeks. The evening we bought them, driving home I noticed the littlest one was breathing funny while it slept. Kinda like it was snoring without the noise. Five days ago a different chick began to wheeze. I read a few article and thought it was gape-worm, but was told it most likely was respiratory, I went to the feed store and they gave me VetRX and Tetroxy HCA-280 I was giving all the chick the antibiotics. The one that was wheezing, stopped wheezing after the second day of med. Then yesterday she started wheezing and really struggling to breath. She died this morning. It was very sad. My daughter said she was giving the chicks water via a dropper on the second day. I think perhaps the wheezing chick aspirated the water. Now, I have two chicks that are breathing funny. The smaller one seems just a touch better not much though, definitely not worse. But shouldn't I see more improvement? My question is do I have to go through the whole 14 days of this antibiotic or can I switch to something else? Is there a stronger product... I just want to see my chicks improving. I don't want to loose all six of them. Oh, the two sick ones are eating and drinking and pooping normally. They are sleeping a ot, but when they are awake they seem perky enough. It's just when they sleep they breath funny. I'm so worried after loosing the one this morning. Oh and btw after it died I did use a q-tip to check it's throat for worms... just had to make sure. There was one tiny little spot of pink... but it looked more like a spot of blood than a Y shape. I checked it twice... just that one little spot. Please if someone could help guide me through this I would so appreciate it.

I just went in and check on the chicks... the littlest one seems to be really struggling to breath when she sleeps... please can someone give me advice... I don't want to loose another chick... this is heart breaking for my girls not to mention me. The TS will be closing in 1/2 hour if I need to get something else I need to do it before it closes... I don't know how I'll handle another chick dying...

Have all chicks been checked for pasty butt? Pasty butt is when there vent is covered in poop. They cannot poop any more and will get real sick.

Well, she remains the same this morning, I'm so thankful for that. I've read more on the topic and am going to try Tylan 50 sub injections... she is really tiny. If anyone see a reason as to why I shouldn't try this PLEASE let me know. I'm going this morning to the feed store to pick some up. I'll most likely give the injection about 10:00. If I'm putting her in danger I hope someone will respond before then. I'm desperate to see her get well. I will keep her on Tetroxy HCA-280 just to finish out her 10 days. I'm also going to add electrolytes to and acv to her water. Is there anything else I need to do? Please some advice on this would really ease my mind at this point. I feel completely lost and hoping I'm doing the right thing. Thanks.

the dose for tylan 50 and chicks is .10 that's one tenth of a cc. you can give it orally or in the back of neck for chicks. hope I'm not too late for this dose information. good luck.

Thanks for the info. I gave them 1/4 cc subcutaneously (I hope) they seem to have taken it well. They are just baby chicks, so small. Do you think I should give them another dose in 12 hours? that would be 1/2 cc in 24 hours. Would that be too much?

When I say subcutaneously I tried to give it in the breast area, just under the skin... before I gave it I checked their crop it was full of feed, small little crumb size feed. After I gave them their injections the crop felt much firmer... I wonder if I got them in the crop? I guess time will tell. They seem to be taking it well for now.

Thanks for your info, if you could answer my dosage question I would be most appreciative. Thanks

yes that's too much. dose for chicks is one tenth of a cc not 1/4cc that dose is for small adult birds
only give .10 that's one tenth of a cc. once daily for 5 days. hope this helps. you can give the injection in the back of the neck for chicks or give it orally. which ever you choose. they should be fine but next dose decrease it to .10. that's the chick dose. hope this helps
