Several years ago, BYC ran an ongoing thread - where people posted the number of eggs set, and the number hatched, both by broody hen and incubators. Over time, a large number of eggs were set and hatched, which while a simple survey, is statistically relevant. 50% was the average of live birds. Now, of course there were people with much higher hatch rates, and people with lower hatch rates, but even people who hatch quite often have successes and failures.

The thing is, not every egg set will hatch. That is just a fact. I figure if I get above a 50% hatch, I have done well, but am not surprised when I don't. The best thing to do with the incubator or the broody hen (and it is the hardest) is leave it alone, and let what happens happen. It is hard not to interfere, and people do with the best intentions, but generally cause more problems than they solve.
