One got away

I don't know how she did it but one of my quail flew the coop. I have them in a pen inside a dog pen that is wraped in chicken wire. I don't remember seeing her fall out of the pen even.

Anyway I'm out feeding the flock this moring and I seen a movement in the grass. As I moved towards it I could see it was a quail. I almost caught her too but my dog came running up and spooked her. She made it thru the fence thats around my property and into a vacant lot next door. It's overgrown with high grass so I lost sight of her. I'm keeping an eye out incase she makes it back.

since she's a hen hopefully the roos crowing brings her back

Keep that doggie away for a while i'd reccomend too or she'll be too skurd to come back.

she more than likely slipped past you when you went in to feed or something. I've had that happen several times and for my set ups they have to fly past me on the pens that hang on teh fence and sometimes i dont even hear them!!!! Next thing i know out of the corner of my eye theres a quail trying to skuttle away from me.

I actually lost a young brown roo last night... I ddint know he was gone until i counted. God only knows where he is

I'm hoping my moms cat gets him rather than him hang out and be a wild quail and attract predators tobe honest....he was going to be a cull anyhow.

We have had a few get out over time when we open the cage to feed/water/clean. They are so fast that it is almost impossible to catch them. We will see them every so often out in the fields or in the woods.

I have 7 that wander & feed all day they come back to the coop thenfor food and water every night sleep there

That is really neat to know. I think we are going to start letting our (then) two year old hens free range next year. Maybe we can have some free range coturnix too!

hope this doesnt offend anyone, but i didnt think coturnix were smart enough to free range. maybe i just had a dumbe flock

It could be some arent talking about coturnix... there are other kind of quail

yeah, i could see some other kinds of quail free ranging, but just not coturnix- they seem like they have no clue what to do when they arent penned up.
