i have a lavender orpington that ALWAYS lays cloudy eggs. Her egg is also thin shelled. The yolk it perfect but the white is very cloudy and looks bad. I’ve read about cloudy yolks being freshest but all others in my coop have clear whites. All eggs are collected each day and no others hens eggs are cloudy. They are cloudy and look the same if they are one day old or one week old. I love to here your thoughts. Thank you!!!

Hi, I had a hen that always laid a cloudy egg, too! All the other hens' eggs were crystal clear so it seemed really weird. And, same thing, the shell was thin and often rough, so I could tell it from the others, so I would keep it apart, scramble it and feed it to the dog. They got cloudier and cloudier, but none of the hens seemed sick so I couldn't tell who was laying it. Eventually she laid one that actually had a second membrane! I guess she was old and quit laying.

Thank you for your input! She is a young hen of 1.5
years. I’m wondering if, because her shells are so thin, if they are contaminated because of that! She is very healthy looking, beautifully feathered, no sign of health problems. No others hens in my flock of nine layers have thin shells.

I don't really know if they might be contaminated...
Let's see if we can get opinions from some of our egg experts, I'll give a few of them a holler. Um...

@KikiDeAnime might be one....
And @WVduckchick .... are you around? How about @Grandma Carol , any advice on this? Not sure who else to ask.... kinda new here myself. But if they can't help you, they night know who can, so stick around.. word travels on quick little claw feet 'round these parts, n whispers on the wind!

Thanks so much! I appreciate the help!

I’m honestly not sure. I get cloudy ones occasionally. Just something that happens on the trip thru their system?
@casportpony had a diagram of egg and shell formation, I believe?

Are you feeding layer feed? Even with layer feed, some hens need more calcium for stronger shells, I’d suggest a side dish of oyster shell. Ones that need it will usually eat it on their own.
