It's sad that people like this are allowed to keep animals. Just to have them wander around and get hurt and/or killed!

Pack dogs are becoming a problem around here too. Another neighbor lost a dozen birds last week, and the paper had a report on calves, goats, and hogs being killed as well.

I think the larger problem is what was mentioned before... the shelters are full, people who've lost their jobs are abandoning pets "out in the country," and others keep taking in strays when they have neither the time, money, or inclination to take care of them properly.

You know, where I live they will NOT come get the dog. They actually TELL you shoot it.

My chickens were attacked last week with no casualty and I chased the dog off... followed the dog home and talked to the owner who INSISTED I shoot the dog next time she comes around. She was raised on a farm and she agrees to protect your property on your property do what you have to do. She took complete blame for what the dog did... as she left from bring me new fencing for my coop's run, she again reminded me if I need to shoot the dog to protect me chickens, don't think twice about it. It will be that way next time.

My neighbor's dogs have gone feral too. She has about five and she's NEVER home so they run off. They actually cornered and killed several of my other neighbor's sheep and her HORSE. Unfortunately, the dogs know better to come to my house (they used to but quickly learned not to), otherwise I'd take care of the problem for everyone. My lab who's bigger and badder than all their dogs combined does a wonderful job protecting our property and my chickens. But one time the dogs ganged up on her, attacked her, and caused serious damage.

I would never waste my time trying to rehome such a dog. Why dump it on someone else? There are plently of good dogs that need good homes in the shelter. The wild dogs and poorly trained dogs simply need to be eliminated.

It's not illegal in Texas to kill an animal that's attacking your livestock. There may be a pound where you are, but there's not one out here in the sticks. Life in the country is vastly different than it is in the city... and I've lived in both.
