One of my cage models I have built

I can't really deploy a pen like that here, for a number of reasons, but very impressive!

Nice pen/s my friend!

I'm taking notes

FOR THOSE WHO LEAVE OPENINGS FOR EGGS TO ROLL OUT...ARE YOU CONCERNED THAT SNAKES CAN ENTER THE OPENING? YOUR CAGES ARE REALLY NICE. I JUST GOT THRU DOING ONE OUT OF SPLIT TWO BY FOURS FOR A COLONY CAGE, I DID NOT LEAVE THE OPENING BECAUSE WE HAVE LOTS OF NON=POISONOUS SNAKES.

I grew up in the coal fields of Southern WV and later moved to VA and now Idaho. I know how snakes are. I have had dogs bitten, eggs swallowed, young chicks and turkey poults swallowed. Black snakes were the worse for eating eggs and chicks. I have even been bitten by copperheads numerous times and had a big timber rattler hung on my pants legs. He hit my ankle but couldn't get through the boot underneath. Where I am at now I have trampled through the mountains in the summer and have never seen a snake or tick. I have seen one small garden snake that the dogs nailed and that's it so no worry about snakes here. If you have snake or predator problems do yourself a favor and get yourself a JRT. They are the best!
OH! I have never seen a rat here

You can do the opening and then cut a piece of wire to cover it and use j-clips for hinges. That way you can open and close it

Don't be so defensive my friend! It is of good design, and gets my 10 out of 10 bean counting points for economical use of wood and wire. It just may not be for everyone, in all situations.

I'm currently working on a slimmed down, indoor version of your design. I can not deploy it outdoors because of critters.

Years ago I had a snake large king snake get into my Aviary built with 1/2 x 1 wire. It happens.

As Joe says, it is a great design.

Sorry didn't mean to come off that way.
The pen pictured is the first one i built. So I am learning and they are looking better and getting a few mods along the way. I don't have a digital camera. I let my daughter have it for school so I use the film camera so it will take while to get more pics.

I don't think your model is being criticized. I think the question was meant in general for anyone or any model that leaves that opening for the eggs to roll out.

Your doing great!

the wire covering sounds great. we have lots of non-poisonous snakes here that are always trying to get in.

I never have been afraid of snakes but they really would PO when they were trying to get out of a cage and couldn't because of that big lump in their stomach. I used to keep a machete laying around for such instances. We have A FEW COONS HERE BUT NOT MANY, SKUNKS, WEASELS AND CATS. Darn caplock!! Bobcats, mt lions and house cats. Bears are probably the worse thing but my little dogs keep all of them out of the yard. We have porcupines and they worry more than anything. If the dogs ever get on one it probably is 50/50 for them to survive. Depends on how many quills they get and how deep and where.
