No washing is necessary unless there have droppings on them. You can remove dirt with a dry cloth. The eggs have a natural antibacterial coating or bloom on them, and that will be washed away if exposed to water. When washing, you should use very hot water, or bacteria can be pushed through the porous surface if cool water is used. You may leave them out on the counter if you will be eating them soon, but I refrigerate mine if I have a lot, or if I am not going to eat them in the next week.
