Ongoing Quilt Projects, Continued from the "No Appreciation...." Thread

Once I made a twin size quilt with retail priced, high quality fabrics and batting. Then I quilted it with stippling on my home machine. Someone offered me $50 for it... Since then I've been shy of pricing things to people. They don't realize the time, effort and work that goes into these projects, let alone the costs we incur. Sometimes it seems the only ones who appreciate our crafts are the other's who participate in the same craft because they feel our pain.

Welcome to BYC and to my thread! You are right, that last thing you said. I know that feeling,of not being appreciated. I'd rather give quilts away than take those insulting prices. Heck, you'd be hard-pressed to get something at Walmart for that these days! That won't even cover the fabric. We all feel your pain here. The more I'm underappreciated, the higher my prices go! I'm dead serious here. If they balk, just tell them they can buy Chinese crap at Walmart all day long (no insult meant to my Chinese great niece-in-law, who I adore, but we all know what we're talking about here, commerce-wise).

Hey ladies, I am pulling out fabrics for another project. Most of these were chosen off colors in the floral print with blues and olive greens in it, but may not all exude the same mood. I picked blues, greens and yellow-golds, different shades of them out of that main fabric, using the color picker on Thousands of Bolts.

Which one(s) of these does not belong, to your eye?

I make a point to use quality supplies and even go so far as to provide a craftsmanship guarantee. It there is a problem to to the quality of my product, I fix it for free.

Quality cottons are not inexpensive, that's for sure. I have good sources and do not overpay, but I don't skimp on quality. You pay for it during construction or your customer will in wear over time, but you know that. I wish others did! I quilt because I love to create quilts. It's really not a business. I just need to move out product so I have room for more projects.

Love the fabrics! For me, I would leave off the fabric in the second pic top row all but the 2nd from the right. They compete with your focus fabric in size of pattern. Same with the first pic top row 2nd from left. They are great colors, though and you have a good eye with color coordination. It's just the competition.

Oh gosh, so true! When I sell my quilts, I want to get the fabric cost and something for my time. (Not all of it, you never get that) For $50, they can have 3 yards of fabric and a pattern and do it themselves...after they spend at least that much again to complete the quilt. ANd then spend $100 on getting it quilted.

@DuckLady, Terrie, did you mean these two?
DSC01556.JPG Of course, I bought them online and wasn't sure of the size of the pattern. I may still be able to use the green one, depending on how the pieces are cut. I'm not sure yet what kind of pattern to use these fabrics in. Still pondering on that.

In the top picture I don't like the third one from left, top row, just seems more 'defined' and busier than the others to me. The 2nd in from left is also a bit off from the mood to my eye but not as much.
I like the golds, but the balloon looking one again seems to not fit in with the 'soft and out of focus' mood of the others.

Good eye there. The 3rd from the left, top row, in the first pic, the swirls, was something I already had here. I do have six yards of that same print in olive green tone that I will do for the backing, though, from the $2.49/yd sale (could not pass that up!). I just put the swirl one in there because the color went with the general colors.

You got what I want, the soft, muted, out-of-focus feel. I may have to pull more out of there and make them be a second quilt. I'm still not sure what to do for the muted quilt-sampler? bargello? medallion? What would lend itself to the mood of those fabrics, do you think?

With those colors I would keep the pattern and stitching in the same 'theme' by trying to to avoid anything that gives the impression of being pointy or harsh/abrupt. Those fabrics seem to call for 'mellow and blending' edges in my mind's eye. Though a solid color for outline and accent may be needed to pull it together so it doesn't come off looking like a vague soft blur instead of a quilt top.
