Ooo, Bunny Ear Mites?

I hope he makes it! :) I know from my research (and experience) how hard it is to get rid of those nasty abscesses.
Well. To be honest. I’ve spent a ton of money on rabbits. Too much for vet bills. And now I have a duck. Little Lou. Who is in deaths door. And because of what I did with the rabbits my husband said no more of that. So. We are still treating my Buck Smokey Joe because we had the surgery etc. but the bills never end. So. I suppose. There is a time to decide which animals are worth spending the money for care. Which. Just writing this tears my heart in two. I would treat them all!!!!!

Aw yeah, I understand. It's hard when things like money get in the way of caring for our animals. My few animals are only pets, so we went ahead and spent the money to care for him. The bunny, Peanut, was my first pet I lost since I was a bit older (14 or 15?) and it was hard. Since then I've learned a lot, and being on these forms and entering ownership of ducks has really taught me a lot. It's hard to say I would, will probably, have to make the decision to not treat an animal, but if I want to get into owning a farm one day, it's a hard decision I'll have to make.

I sure hope Little Lou and Smokey Joe make it!!

I am wondering if the baby oil, which I read now has a fragrance added, is what caused eye irritation and hair loss on the buns.

One certainly has to decide early on if our animal charges are livestock or pets. My breeder Buns are more pet like and have names, but are ultimately livestock for our homestead. If this turns out to be real serious, I may get an early lesson in culling rabbit :(

The good news though is less oil treatments has resulted in return of normal eyes. Watching and waiting on the fur matters. Can't fully rule out mites (I presume I can't see with naked eye.) I need to research if Permethrin poultry dust would help me, seems better than Permethrin spray for rabbits. And this all reminds me my chickens butts need a spraying, and the goats need some sulphur dusting. Never ending animal maintenance.

The fragrance, which is designed for use in babies, should be pretty harmless unless your rabbit is especially sensitive such as an allergy. You could try switching to a different non-toxic oil and see if it helps, though I think that something like tea tree would be harsher not gentler. Getting oil in the eyes would cause irritation no matter what kind so I imagine it was just a bit of a fluke. I'm glad it's clearing up the ear mites but I'm sorry your rabbit is experiencing other symptoms.

I can't think of any skin conditions that are serious, even mange while very communicable is very treatable. The big hard to treat/expensive issues in bunnies is respiratory issues and abscess. Even a bottle of terramycin for eye infections is only about $6-$10. So I highly doubt you'll have to cull.
Also, I know many of my rabbits recently went through a big molt so you should probably just keep and eye on it for a while and see it it gets worse/better and go from there.
