Opa's place -Where an old rooster visits with friends

I sure wish when grass starts growing again in the spring it would do so evenly. I have some spots in the yard where the grass is a foot high while the rest is barely an inch. So now, if I don't mow soon, I will have areas that will need raking. I've already raked a large area to remove dead drass and winter debris and I don't care to rake anymore.

I must be entering into my senile phase of life. Tonight I placed 3 dozen bantam eggs in the incubator. I only want a single spangled hamburg pullet and a single blue orpington pullet. Several folks have said they want to buy some of my bantams, especially the vorwerks, so I started all the eggs that were laid in 10 days. If I have a good hatch and they change their minds I will have way to many. I'll probably have to cook up a batch of chick chow mein.

It's quite depressing to walk into the brooder room and see your favorite chick die right in front of you. Watching her shudder and then fall over, her eyes fluttering one last time before closing eternally...

R.I.P. Infel. You shall be missed. *sniffle*

Sprite, one of the sad realities of raising chickens is that you will ocassionally lose one. Still it is never easy. Sorry you've had to go thru it.

PK, Sorry you lost Infel.

Did you only have the two? Is the other one lonely?

Awww, sorry you lost a chick PK, it's never easy. I accidentally killed one of mine last week, it sucks but life goes on.

Lol, it's that spring fever again, isn't it? I lost one duck, so next week I have 15 ducklings and a goose hatching to replace it. I wish math was this fun at school.

Well, we have 4 now. We lost Nenesha a week or two ago, and we thought Infel was going to make it. I guess not...

Either way, good morning! How are you all doing?

Not a good week for birds! PK, sorry you have lost two chicks, do you know why? If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

I lost a duck yesterday, sadly to my own dog. The duck panicked after dark, while being pursued by a fox, and flew into the dogs yard. Then in the middle of the night I heard the chickens in an uproar and got outside just in time to scare whatever it was off. Judging by the running sounds and the fact that it scaled a gate to get in, I think it was the fox. Two hens had been attacked, but I've not found any injuries yet. Need to work on that pen, I recommend we all buy stock in the company that makes hardware cloth!

Opa, it must be spring fever, like Thistle said, since I have 20 eggs incubating, too! Where the heckydoo am I going to put so many chickens????

Woody, much appreciated! I'm going to give it a shot, after all, nothing to lose.

CCMH, hope you are safe and sound.

Opa, I am firmly against "pocket pets"!

PK so sorry about your chick, thats the hard part of all of this; losing some along the way. Glad you still have some others to enjoy.
We are doing well today, more storms later; but the worst will be over in the bootheel and thataway if they get the forecast right, so hopefully it won't be too bad other than a few more inches of rain. Hate to hear about the fox; so far we have only seen one this year but its about time for that to get worse with them having kits.
Spring must be in the air, my bator has 41 eggs in it again...hoping they make it through this time and I get a nice big red rooster. Our "papa roo" was dispatched this morning. Had noticed he had been being a little rough with the girls lately, but when you draw blood and hold one of my girls down so the others can pluck her head all bets are off. So we need a new roo for next spring.
Hope you all have a good afternoon and evening!
Blessings, CCMH

edited because I don't always pay close attention to what I am doing!!! *sigh* sorry.....
