It depends on how you kill them. If you draw an imaginary line between an ear and the opposite eye and again on the other side, that place where those lines cross is the best place to put your bullet. They will tremor slightly but you should not see the spasms to the extremeties like you do a chicken. A mild tremor and a small jerking to the body but over very quickly.

I finally got up the courage to raise and butcher my own this year. My Hubby didn't think I was going to be able to do it, but I proved him wrong! LOL
I read a news article a couple of weeks ago about how kids are reaching puberty earlier all the time, and I thought, well, duh! It's because they are getting doused with hormones every day from their milk and meat. My goal now is to stay away from milk, meat and eggs in the grocery stores as much as possible. I raise dairy goats, and the raw goat's milk is all the milk my kids drink now. We also of course have our own eggs (which we had for our supper tonight, BTW) and now a few of our own chickens in the freezer as well. I am trying to talk DH into letting me get a steer this fall, we had a roast from a cow that my friend raised for supper last night, and it was GOOD!! I want more of that!

I admire those who grow their own, lord knows I have spent plenty of time, money and energy trying to do just that. I also try not to judge those who do/can not. Anyone/ or anyone's child that has ever worked at a fast-food restraunt, deli, grocery store, factory, ect. had that job due to comercial food ind. We all need to understand that at this point the world just has too many people in it not to have comercial food industery. Knowing how hard I've worked on my chickens & veggie garden, and seeing how much we yeild, thank goodness for the grocery store or we would starve. I may not agree with big business way of raising chickens, but up until this year I spent the last 29 years eating it which allowed me to live long enough to write this. Everyone needs to eat.

Spend you time doing

Not judging

It's not your job to do

Nobody likes to be judged... and I certainly don't want to judge... but I do wish people would spend just a wee bit more time educating themselves. Like the person that told me that she will only eat eggs from the grocery store because chickens on farms free range and eat bugs. Or the person that freaks out because I'm raising chickens for meat but has no issue picking up fried chicken from Popeye's or McDonald's for dinner. I don't feel I'm judging someone when I point out they might want to look at the facts and check out the farms the stores and fast food places get their eggs and chicken meat from... just sayin'.

Yes, and if anyone ELSE would like to get rid of their DAUGHTERS pet Muscovies, I'd be glad to take them, especially at $1.00 each!! I did give the gal $20.00. She said no, but then took it for the girls. I'll give them ALL good homes!!

DH says we were born in the wrong century...

most of what we eat we've harvested from our garden, woods or back yard.

Our friends and family have said similar things that some of you have heard also....when the trucks stop rolling, they're coming to our house.
I always thought that was funny because the majority of them turn their noses up when I say I'm throwing a backstrap on the grill...

Our parents have no issue eating our eggs or chickens, it's the siblings that turn their noses up at everything. I like to think I'm a GREAT cook, and it sure as heck shows when my brothers come over and inhale my food. They ALWAYS ask if it's CHICKEN eggs (lol) or my chickens that they are eating. I tell them not to worry about it and just finish inhaling their food. After they are done smacking their lips I go ahead and 'fess up. They're always SHOCKED, but there is no way they would have turned down that SECOND HELPING.

Even my sister comes over and digs into whatever it is I'm cooking. She'll mention how DELICIOUS it is and halfway thru stuffing her face she'll stop and realize that more than likely it has some of my "chicken product" in it. She does this little mantra were she tells herself, "It's just regular food, it's just regular food, it's just regular food." It's just something they need to get over, and with my cooking skillz I'm sure they'll come around in no time flat.

Along with all the cute little rodents and such that get chewed up by the tractors, and fish and other marine life killed off by the runoff of chemical fertilizers.

That said, I do support vegans and vegetarians of conscience. If I couldn't get my meat, eggs, and milk from anywhere but a factory farm system, I would become a vegan, too. Animal cruelty might still be a part of it, but at least it is minimized. You have to eat something.

And at least they are one up on the morons discussed in the OP.

I'm sorry but I just don't buy that at all. Eco agriculture can easily feed the world, and in fact will one day have to because the current commercial system is completely unsustainable.

But that's food for another rant.
