open roost?

I live in Lower Alabama too. The only "coops" my birds have is a piece of tin nailed to the side of the barn, like a "lean to" sort of deal, open on 3 sides, with a perch under it and nest boxes nailed to the wall under the perch. On the rare occasions we have teen temps at night I *might* hang a piece of tarpaper or old blanket off the tin to block the wind. You should retain the coop idea being that you already have the coops. They do need a place to lay.

As far as all your birds roosting in the same section, don't worry about it. If they want more room they'll start sleeping on the other perch too. If you have unused roost space you could always get more chickens to fill it up. Hahahahhaha. I recently had to put dividers on the 14' perches in the layer pen because the old grumpy hens wouldn't let the new pullets from the grower pen roost with them. Some evenings they all fuss & fight and kick each other off the perch and go roost in different sections, some evenings they all pile up on the same perch like they're best buddies.

Thanks chicken legs 13, and i am in the market to get some more just hard to find the breed im after. I have my nesting boxes seperate from the coop they are in a small enclosed box free standing. One coop has 3 roost and the other has 2 roost pearchs. And my rooster sleeps outside in the open for some reason.
