operating system advice needed

Bollocks! Feller is finishing up his PhD in computing science and this is the ONLY operating system he will use.

Sounds to me like IT guy is pushing MS for a reason.

It is because it is what he believes is the best functioning and most useful. He doesn't work for MS.

I should point out that Ubuntu is just like using windows - point and click. Same type of interface. Your IT guy is probably talking about older distributions of Linux that are text based using a command line.

Well considering that my IT guy is my hubby..... I am gonna go ahead and trust him like I always have

And given that I've actually used Ubuntu, I'm gonna go with what I know to be true from first hand experience.

Seriously. Just because one person likes something doesn't mean we all have to. It is what makes us different. And just because I like something doesn't mean everyone else has to either.

Actually, my point wasn't like or dislike. I was just pointing out (from experience) that Ubuntu isn't how you described it

This may be free, but you cannot do more than type letters. It is not a fully functional operating system. (Hubby is an IT guy, I asked before I posted, don't shoot me)

The newest distribution of Ubuntu is definitely a complete OS... earlier versions when they were still using slackware ..... yeah.... I didn't like it back then either but when they got to ver 8x it was on par with and better than windows IMHO.... but then again, none of my customers use Linux so I am still stuck in the world of Microsoft. I've got every MS operating system running here at the house except Windows 7

To the OP's question...... I'd take XP over vista. My new laptop I made sure had XP and I got it 2 months ago! Much more stable.

Windows 7 is supposed to be a big improvement over Vista. I would give it some consideration, it will be released commercially in about 3 weeks.
