operating system advice needed

I'd use XP over Vista.
You can always upgrade later when they come out with something that works better than vista. I'm probably dating myself but, vista is kinda like what windows ME was.

There are other operating systems. Some are better then others. Windows is fine if that's all you want to deal with.

In the beginning there was only assembly language....and then there was DOS....

After that it all went to pot.

XP, VISTA, Ubuntu, O/O, What ever It make no difference. THe ALL have problems from time to time.

XP is an older system it will soon be obsolete, like Word Perfect....

VISTA is the newer system, comes on all the new computers. But it's different, No one likes change. Some compatability problems in the past but it's getting much better real fast. Keep the auto update thing enabled.

Some of us went to linix, unix, red hat, etc... and yes, even though I like them, they also have problems....

Ubuntu is an O/S now and is no better than the others, good luck buying a computer with it installed, or with a processor that was designed to use it....I'm just saying.

Open Office Is just like Microsoft Office I have both, some things work on one but not the other...

Bottom line--figure out what you want to use your copmuter for, THEN find an O/S that serves your purpose.

If all else fails, buy a MAC. Plug it in, turn it on, "ding" you gota puter!

Thanks for all of the input. My DH is concerned about getting Windows 7 right now - he wants to let others work out all the bugs! He liked the idea of upgrading in the future if W7 turns out to be better.

We have dual boot on all the computers, XP/Simpy Mepis Linux. My wife uses Linux all the time, I switch between the systems. I like Linux much better but some things are designed not to run on Linux, Thank You MS for sticking it to us.

For most tasks Linux is faster, smaller, more secure, and once setup correctly just a joy to work with. NetFlix is one of the sites designed not to work on Linux. Something is just not right about that.

This may be free, but you cannot do more than type letters. It is not a fully functional operating system. (Hubby is an IT guy, I asked before I posted, don't shoot me)

I regularly write software in it.

I have a dual OS on this computer, right now I am using the windows side because a couple of the programs I need for my courses are windows based and I have to use these specific programs.

Download it, burn it to a CD, install it yourself. I've installed it on a multitude of different processers, from a top of the line computer and a cheap 5 year old e-machine.

Or, ya know, just buy a mac

For me the problem always comes down to games. So many games are written for windows only, so I'll never be rid of windows installed PCs.

We have a friend who got some games ( MMO's) to work on linux. It took some trial and error, but he got it to work. Not all of them will do it, but it's possible.

Possible, but the lag tends to increase a bit which, in a fast paced shooter like my husband likes, makes a major difference.
