Wow! Now that I went and looked at the NPIP OK site, it doesn't say you have to do it? But each time they come and test...they do the AI test anyway? They also test for Newcastle as well?

It's not a requirement, yet. However, if you do volunteer to be tested for AI, the state testers will test your flock for free and all you have to do is pay for the certification, which is like... $5.00.
A lot of state poultry shows have the AI requirement, because of the out of state breeders bringing poultry in to be shown.
I just assumed it was $5.00 no matter what! I mean...I know which deal I'd like...so I guess my tired brain assumed it was mandatory. When they came out here this last time, they said they were testing for Newcastle as well.
I'll trade, buy, and sell anything, but its (or they) by themselves for a while. I aint never lost one from bringin another one in yet, the only ones ever dead are the ones I butcher myself, or got by predators, and one time someone stole a whole bunch, and I lost a couple cuz they wandered quite a ways from any shade or water and got heatstroke. So I've got some good birds from other folks so far!

Rimshoes and others, CRD is a common ailment that is not tested through hatcheries. Atleast the few I've heard from do not test, are not required to test.
At this point, if we were to bring "clean" birds home, they would not have the antibodies to cope with what nature is exposing us to. NPIP I believe, USA wide, are only required to test for Pull/typhoid. The other tests are not mandatory, yet if you are concerned with your states poultry conditions, please write your State Veterinarian, its important that all of us take a stand to see if we can do something different, at least acknowledge what the small back yard farmers are dealing with. I have brought these illness' up to Maine State Vet, just so the discussion and perhaps recognition state and country wide.
That is why at one point I shook my head and said "ignorance is often bliss".
For those of you unaware, please click on the link in my profile, it is information (part of) with directions you can go to read on diff conditions.
This has turned out to be an extremely interesting topic. I find that those of you that have closed, have a back ground of why they choose this, yet those that have open, are doing what I wish I could do!
The CRD, MG topic that I had with a NPIP tester , I asked that now I assume my birds have MG, he said "I can bet you are going to test positive", because in 1980 most of the wild birds that were caught and released were positive for many of the contagious conditions that we all worry about.
He also told me that if I wanted to raise turkeys, that I'd have to find someone who raised poultry on the same property to prevent everyone being ill and the turkey having sinusitis and possibly die.
Broilers that is a different story, do those first, then go on to the rest of the flock.
Washing your hands, caution with shoes and clothing, pay attention to details.
