Optimal flock size?

Has anyone else noticed that quail seem happier if you keep them in smaller groups?

Sometimes I think my quail who live together in a big group (20-30) are doing okay, but other times it seems like small groupings of 4-7 adults are more harmonious. I’d never try to fit 60 birds in 60 square feet, but 6 birds seem to do okay in 6 feet, so long as there isnt more than 1 boy.

how big of a flock do you guys keep in a single space?

They seem to naturally hang out in smaller friend groups even in large flocks, but do whatever works best for you and your quails. If they get along fine in a large group, great.

I keep around 60 in approximately 400 sq feet

I keep mine in smaller groups, but that's for breeding. I also don't have the space for a really big aviary.

I like smaller groups. My plan is to stop at three separate pens, for a max of 24 birds. We'll see how that goes. They're kind of addictive.

One male per cage...always, for me.
Always small groups too.
