Where do you get your broilers from? There is about three or four hatcheries that are around us in Ohio....

I've found Moyers to be the most consistant in PA.

I order my Broilers from Moyers because they are the closest hatchery to me that has them. For the "rare" stuff I use Ideal.

I was really looking forward to ordering a batch of Colored Range Broilers from JM Hatchery in Feb, but Mister lost his job Feb 1 & our $$$ is gone...

So I'm just letting my broody bantams incubate standard-sized eggs from my mixed-breed flock. I'm hoping to sell the pullets to folks looking for nice laying hens, and the cockerels go into the meat pen. I also picked up 8 SLW cockerel chicks someone was posting locally on FreeCycle. They came as packing peanuts from his Ideal order and he didn't want to keep them. I was glad to invite those boys home for dinner.

So what if they won't be as meaty as those Xs or Rangers, at least they're free, and don't eat like such pigs, and are easy to care for while they're here.

Range or feed? If feed - what kind? just curious, since you say better tasting I'm guessing yours were range, yeah? I'm looking over cost effectivness right now and finding we would probably break even or spend more......

Since we don't have space for range....

even if free rangeing them you still have to feed them..I feed them meat bird feed..anything else they wont grow as fast and that means you are putting more money into them in the end then you would otherwise..

I had been waiting for a return call from our local feedstore letting me know when they'd have meaties available. After seeing this thread, I went ahead and placed my online order instead for 30 Cornish that *should* ship the week of 3/9.

On Valentine's day we processed the last of the 27 that we had and only have about 4 left after taking care of orders from friends and family. C'mon chicks....
