Ordering spring chicks....so much fun. What did you get?

I got my order from Ideal Poultry this week. All the chicks look very healthy and happy. We had Welbars, Anconas, EE and Blue Stars in our order. There was even a mystery chick and the EE was the cutest ever. Unfortunately, my 5 Blue Star's ended up being 5 Blue Cuckoo marans. I'm a bit stressed about it. They offered to send Blue Stars, but I don't have space for so many baby chicks and having to rehome could be an ordeal. Not sure what we'll do.

Blue Cuckoo Marans are gorgeous birds! What a happy accident lol

I got mine yesterday. Ordered from TSC.com, which come from Hoover's. Usually pasty butt doesn't start until a few days after arrival....this time, it was a few HOURS! Glad it's not just me. I use a syringe to squirt a small stream of warm water on the butt, then hold a moist warm washcloth to the spot for as long as tolerated. I've found better luck with the warm washcloth than with a moistened q-tip, which seemed to work last year.
I have actually taken the chicks into the bathroom and gotten a nice gentle stream of warm water going and just let the stream wash right over their butts. Then I can use the washcloth to gently remove anything I need to. But I was so worried about accidentally pulling on their navels, I preferred to just let the water do the delicate work. Gave me a nice excuse to cuddle with them in a handtowel while they dried off, and then just keep an eye while they finish under the light. 👍

The hatchery shows the lay rate at 200/yr for Blue Cuckoo Maran and 240/yr for Blue Star. That’s my main disappointment. I’ve never had Marans before, but maybe I should just stick with them and not worry about the “loss” of eggs.😅
You might come to love them. Cackle accidentally sent me lavender orpingtons instead of Ameraucanas and now I'm an orpington fan.

That must be the recipe to become an Orpington lover😂 I needed an extra chick for a Meyer order to meet the chick minimum so I added a Jubilee Orpington in my cart. Now Orpingtons are my favorite!

I have a blue cuckoo also! Love her! And her eggs are darker than my FBCM, so beautiful! When I look at eggs per year, in my mind I think that if there are less eggs laid in 1 year, they will lay for a longer period of time with less health problems. I understand being upset with the mistake…hopefully you love them anyway!

My wife and I ordered 16! These will be our first chickens.
We got Barred Rocks, Amerecaunas (Easter Eggers?), Anconas, and one random Chick. A friend told us the Barred Rocks may not be friendly though...

Our friend has Brahma's which are SUPER sweet and docile.
My barred rock (4 wk pullet from Murray McMurray) was the absolute sweetest ever
