Oregon Fall Poultry Swap - October 22 - Corvallis @ the Fairgrounds!!!

I wouldn't think a rat would take on a full grown chicken either but what else could it have been? We've had a opossum problem but there's no way it could've gotten in the coop. Are there any other small critters native to Oregon that could attack chickens?

Weasels. But yes, a rat will go after a full grown chicken. A friend of mine lots one of his hens to one a couple of years ago. She wasn't QUITE full grown, but very near POL.

That's what you need Yorkies for!

They (at least my Duncan is) are great in catching rats, mice, moles, etc.

Tam'ra of Rainbow Vortex-

Missing heads= weasle. Nothing else does that except maybe an owl and the difference in the wounds will be obvious which predator it is. Weasles are notorious for popping heads off poultry.

You are gonna have to kill it or relocate it. They will squeeze through tiny holes. A weasle head is only about the size of a quarter or smaller. If they can get their head through, the rest of the body goes too.

My dogs are terrific rat and weasle killers. If no dogs, use traps. Good luck! Be diligent, they are!

What about traps? Do they work? I know my sister uses them for coons, but I don't think she has ever had problems with weasles.

Myself, I thought about those 'eyes' to keep predators away. But did some investigating on them and read that most people didn't have much luck with them. Reviews were really bad. Best info stated was that flashing red 'christmas' lights worked just as good and where a heck of a lot cheaper. My backyard is pretty dark, so I thought I might hang some christmas lights just to see if they actually did anything. (other then look cute

(Hope the red doesn't clash with the pink I'm painting the coops.)

Yes! My old yorkie that passed away 3 years ago, was great about ratting but my yorkie now is a little bit of a scaredy cat! She'd rather be inside and play with her toys lol

You can trap a weasle in a have-a-heart trap (live trap). You might find a home for it at another farm without poultry. I worked at a plant nursery where we pampered the weasles to keep the rodents out. A dairy barn might want them. Now is about the time they will be nesting, so if they have babies you will have to wait till the babies come out.

You can use a trash can with some meat in the bottom. Make a ramp for them to climb into the can. Once they jump in there, they will be stuck. They love chicken, no kidding. They like bisson meat too.

Regarding the swap in Oct - for those of you who can eat chickens but maybe like me, not ones you've raised personally, maybe we can have a big "rooster" swap for any that don't sell/swap. You know, bring the ones you can't bear to eat, take someone elses home
